I would like to send an immense blossom to the City of Monroe employees, the staff of St. Clare Frediensheim, and also to the caring people who organized and purchased goods at the bake sale to help with the recovery of Johnny Hinojosa and his family. All of your efforts and gifts were greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten. Thanks so much. - Johnny Hinojosa and his family

Huge, huge bouquets of blossoms to Gene Wilson and the Green County Fair board for their continuous efforts to upgrade the fairgrounds. The addition of a gravel drive around Barn 10 is a huge improvement, as is the new roofing and paint on the buildings. Your efforts are appreciated. - Anonymous

On behalf of the Green County Humane Society, we would like to send a blossom to everyone who donated items for their recent Garage Sale and Bake Sale. A special thank you to Sherri Fiduccia and Monroe Auto Sales for letting us use her display room; the Rent-It Center; Jim Doyle from Bullet's for helping us with the tables; and the ladies who gave up so much of their time to help with the sale: Cheryl Beck, Vickie Holland, Mary Hamilton, Sandy Dierckman and Barb Manthei. More blossoms to The Monroe Times, WEKZ, and The Shopping News for all the publicity. Without all of you, none of this would have been possible. And finally, more blossoms for Bob Beck, Jim and Dan Bartholf and Dennis Dreikosen for helping close down the sale. GCHS took in more than $1,800, all of which goes to the shelter for the cats and dogs. Our next garage and bake sale will be April 26, 27 and 28 of 2012. Thanks to you all. - Geri Bartholf and Kathy Dreikosen

The Parkside Elementary teachers and staff would like to send a bountiful bouquet of blossoms to the Monroe Walmart for gracing our staff with the wonderful surprise of $1,000 worth of gift cards for our teachers to use towards their classrooms. This incredibly generous donation will be put to perfect use as we bring in more books, educational activities and classroom supplies that we wouldn't have been able to purchase otherwise without dipping into our own personal finances. Also, thank you for the scrumptious treats during our staff meeting on Wednesday and the Subway gift certificates. The students and staff at Parkside are extremely thankful to have your support in education. - Parkside teachers and staff

A barb to those who do not understand that when private industry fails to adequately provide basic services in the market, government must step in to fill the gap. For example: Rural electrification was a few decades behind urban areas in getting electric wires strung -- too expensive to run wires to a distant farm. Similar case with rural telephone service. Failing to provide basic services the rest of the U.S. takes for granted to rural areas denigrates us as both citizens and as human beings. And now it's getting broadband out, where private industry fails to provide because the profit levels would be "insufficient."

A blossom to those who realize that when the private-sector "job creators" aren't creating jobs inside the U.S., government needs to step in to get needed projects going: infrastructure (which is seldom if ever provided by the private sector -- insufficient profit again), energy conservation, soil and water conservation, repairs and improvements to roads, bridges and schools, and the like. These jobs mean folks get paid, which then means part of that pay is spent locally supporting other jobs and businesses. It also means that these jobs generate tax revenue, in the form of sales tax as goods are bought, property taxes or the portion of the rent allotted to property taxes, and income taxes withheld at the state and federal levels, not to mention FICA - supporting Social Security. The second thing Congress must do is to quit rewarding irresponsible corporations for moving U.S. jobs overseas, not to mention working out how to get their fair share of taxes paid here.

A big barb to those in Congress using partisan politics to wrong honest working people, youth and seniors in this country. Passing a funding bill to keep the country running "for another month" is an embarrassing waste of federal resources. It's a huge waste of effort for what's basically a "housekeeping action." (Can you say "how to create full employment for ignorant/unprepared elected representatives?") - M.E.McKnight

A blossom to Mother Nature for this awesome autumn weather. Get out, go for a walk and enjoy all of beautiful trees, especially at Twining Park. We are lucky to have such a beautiful park, one that is perfectly setup for a lighting display. The kind that Warner Park in Madison and other cities across the country have during the holidays. This is another great way to boost tourism with local business participation.

Speaking of holidays, a huge blossom to Monroe Main Street for the great job this summer. Please, please keep the momentum up for this holiday season. It shows that passion and competence can do wonders when working together.

As for passion, a blossom to all the coaches from Blackhawk to Monroe to all across the region. These men and women work awfully hard for our kids and at times seems like they have a thankless job.

A barb to the drug dealings and dealers in our neighborhoods. We see you. We know what you're doing and we have called the local police. If not and you do see something suspicious, please call the cops because if we don't, nobody will. It's time to put the genie back in the bottle. It's our business, it's our kids' business, it's our neighborhoods' business and it's long past time we put these local drug dealers out of business. Thank you and God Bless America. - Rob McCarthy, Monroe
