Blossoms & Barbs: November 26, 2011

Bunches of blossoms to all of you who made the planters on the Square beautiful for the holidays: Stan and Donna Oxenreider for the boughs; Monroe Lions Club for trimming and delivering boughs to the Square; and Monroe Woman's Club and friends for arranging boughs in the planters.

Another blossom goes to the shopkeepers and elves for gracing the lamp posts with seasonal garlands and bows. We extend a special thank you to Greenco Industries for watering and maintaining the planters so splendidly all summer long. If you haven't noticed, the lights are glowing in front of the post office these dark evenings. As you can see, it takes a lot of hands to make our downtown sparkle. - The Monroe Main Street Design Committee

A blossom to Green County Sheriff's Deputy Bernie Roidt, who helped remove a small plastic garbage container jammed underneath my car on Wisconsin 11/81. It was well wedged in; I backed up and it went with the car. Bernie came along after about 10 minutes. He squeezed it down and I was able to back off it. Thank you. - Nancy Carney, Brodhead

Blossoms to the Monroe Times for the article by Columnist Jill Pertler in the Nov. 17 edition. If all the protesters would read the article and stop for a moment to think about all the good that surrounds them, maybe some of the world would be a better place. - A reader.

Dozens and dozens of blossoms to the Monroe Theatre Guild for what you have done to the old Stage building. It looks amazing! It truly adds to our downtown area. -Anonymous

A big blossom to all the waitresses in town. Next time you are out to eat, remember that minimum wage for waitresses is $2.35 per hour. Your tips enable them to actually make a living wage. - Anonymous

Another barb against Walker. Most people thought the "cultural war" concerning religion in the Wisconsin State Capitol was over years ago, but Walker has re-ignited it. In other words, it was recognized that freedom of religion also means freedom from religion and that religion has no place in government, politics and the public. Religion in government, politics and the public violates the Jeffersonian principle of separation of church and state. This means that the Capitol has holiday decorations and a holiday tree and not Christmas decorations and a Christmas tree. Now Walker has started the "cultural war" all over again, which means more boycotts, court battles and protests. It is as if he is out to alienate and tick off just about everybody. - Dave Searles

A blossom: Reading Jill Pertler's column on Nov. 23 brought to mind a couple of incidents I've had while shopping. One I'd like to thank is the produce manage at Piggly Wiggly. Radishes were at an all-time high and knowing a whole bunch would only end up going to waste, I asked the gentleman if it was possible for me to buy just three radishes I needed for a recipe. Having worked in a supermarket myself many years ago, I was aware that things often get knocked off bunches before they are put out on the display counter. He said something like, "I think I can manage that." He went to the back room and came out with a plastic bag with three radishes. He had marked the price at 10 cents. I was a very happy shopper. It's that kind of service that tends to encourage a shopper to come back time and time again.

Just recently I was shopping in one of the "Dollar Stores" in Monroe when a customer asked the clerk, "How much is this?" The clerk had probably been asked that more than one time and replied, "Usually it's one dollar but since you asked, it's two dollars." Surrounding customers, including myself, got a good laugh out of that one. - Marlene
