Blossoms & Barbs: Nov. 13, 2010

A big blossom to the Monroe Public Library. In these tough economic times there are so few places that the community can go that are still free. I was amazed to learn of the great things the library has to offer. They have Wii games, DVDs, Blu-Rays, and even a Kindle, Sony e-book reader and Nook e-book reader for the public to check out. This is in addition to free Internet access. This is great for jobseekers that may not have access to these the Internet at home. I recently noticed that they are working on some cosmetic changes to the inside of the building which will make it even more comforting and inviting than it already is. Not only do they have all this, but they have a great staff that is always polite and friendly and willing to assist me with any questions I may have. Monroe is very fortunate to have this available to the public. - Happy Library Patron

A huge blossom to all of the volunteers that helped make the 2010 Green County Veterans Appreciation Dinner happen. The Albany and Monroe Lions Club put on an excellent lunch in Albany, with cakes for dessert provided by the Monroe Senior Center. Milk for lunch was provided by the Olin Oil Company. Additional help was provided by the Juda Forefathers organization, who graciously filled in where ever help was needed. Excellent music was provided by Del Heins and Jerry Hastings. Also, individual thanks are given to Stan and Barb Erlandson for taking reservations this year. And a big thank you to all the unnamed individuals that helped to make this event a success. - The Green County Veterans Service Office

A blossom to retiring Sheriff Randall L. Roderick for his fine service over the years 1972-2011. Green County has been a better place to live thanks to Sheriff Roderick and his fine sworn and unsworn staff at Green County Sheriff's Agency. Sheriff Roderick has been a leader in the community for years and should be recognized for his effort. Thank you, Sheriff Roderick. - Anonymous

A barb to Wasted Space. At least he is giving positive blossoms to those that do good in this community and thanking people. I think your "comment" was wasted space! JD ... keep the blossoms and comments coming. Some of us rather enjoy reading them. - Anonymous

A blossom to Wasted Space for inadvertently, or perhaps intentionally, bringing it to my attention that there are still unhappy people out there that need a little cheer, or perhaps a hug, or maybe just a kind word to make their day go better. Tell you what Space, since you seem to think that I need more to do, perhaps we should get together and go volunteer a day at the hospital, or nursing home, or a soup kitchen, so that you can see that you really don't have it that bad. Look me up, I am in the book. And for the folks responding, please don't say anything mean or degrading to Space ... they are entitled to their opinion. - Jeff Ditzenberger

A big huge blossom to the Monroe High School Wrestling Team for the wonderful job they did raking the leaves in our yard on Sunday. They have restored our faith in the youth of the area. Keep up the good work and maybe the other high school kids will learn from your example. -Happy 13th Street resident

A big blossom and Thank You to the Albany American Legion for their dinner last Saturday, Nov. 6 honoring veterans. - A local veteran

***

A huge blossom to the Moose Lodge for the Breakfast Benefit they provided for the Green County Historical Society on Sunday, Sept. 7. We appreciate all the work the men did to cook such a delicious breakfast and also the Moose ladies who worked Sunday too. We would also like to give a blossom to all the people who came to eat and thus support the museum. The money we made that day will help in the future to restore our stained glass windows. - The Green County Historical Society

A barb against professional tree cutters who tell home owners that their tree or trees are unsafe and must be taken down, when it or they are not, but the they tell the homeowner that to make money. - Dave Searles

A huge barb to both the Belleville-Albany football coaches and school administrators for allowing players who were busted for underage drinking after the homecoming game to be eligible for post-season awards. What is that saying to all the other players when you can break the athletic code and still earn all conference awards? You should be ashamed of yourselves. - Football fan

We were surprised on Sunday when two high school students raked part of our lawn as part of a school project. Thanks to Veronica and Luke. - Hans and Helen K.

A huge blossom to Green County Board Supervisor Cathy Cryor Burweger for "no" vote to the county 2.4 percent hike in the tax rate for 2011. The average family has reduced spending to balance their budgets due to wage freezes, reduced hours and increases in insurance costs. We need more supervisors to stand up for the people of the district that voted them in.

Another blossom to Monroe Main Street and Alderman Thurston Hanson in bringing The Christmas Parade instead of The Holiday Parade to Monroe. Remember the true meaning of Christmas this year. - A Senior Citizen

A barb to Monroe Youth Hockey for not up holding their rules for underage drinking. - Mark Qudie
