Blossoms & Barbs: March 21, 2009

A barb to "Disappointed." >Why is it unreasonable that whomever is responsible for damaging property is expected to pay for it to be repaired? Rather ridiculous if this was not the case, since all the taxpayers would pay the bill. Reporting an accident and paying damages is part of being an upstanding citizen and following the law. Some of the barbs posted here are extremely petty. - Barb to Disappointed>

I am upset, saddened and obligated to barb The Monroe Times >for the way it worded its most recent poll question, "Would you support the Green County Humane Society if it decided to euthanize aggressive dogs as a last resort?" I think this was a very slanted question, worded to elicit an emotional response from the public. Including the phrase "as a last resort" virtually ensured that the majority of the public would vote in favor of euthanasia. I am very disappointed that the poll question was asked BEFORE the public has even been informed that the GCHS has developed and approved a new Aggressive Dog Policy. Have they? The last I heard, the GCHS was just starting the process of determining what constitutes an aggressive dog and we, the public, have not yet been provided with that definition. I sure hope that nobody thinks the response to this poll gives anyone any valid data on which to make decisions. The definition of an aggressive dog is a moving target as of right now, based on each individual's opinion. I, for one, will stand up for these animals to the bitter end because, right now, I don't think that anyone knows what they're talking about. You tell me definitively, in written documentation, what is an aggressive dog as defined by the GCHS, and then ask me that poll question. - Margaret A. (Peggy) Miller>

I agree with Peggy, and I think a huge barb >should be added to GCHS for allowing a poll like that to be published on the Times Web site. It was worded in a way to get a specific result. First reaction by anyone would be to vote "Yes," but anyone trained in dog rehabilitation would know the answer is not black and white. I find it interesting there isn't any information linked to this poll to give the public the info they need to make an educated choice. Sounds to me like the Humane Society doesn't want the public to know all the details. My question would be why? What exactly is going on that the public isn't being told? - Watching Closely >

Editor's Note: The GCHS had absolutely nothing to do with the online news poll. Weekly poll questions are written and posted online by Monroe Times news staff.>

A barb to cowards. >I have not had an opportunity to read the Saturday, March 14, edition of The Monroe Times, but I heard from a friend that there was another unsigned barb against me for my barb against the Brodhead mayor and city council for not doing anything about the unsafe sidewalks in Brodhead. - Dave Searles, Brodhead>

A huge blossom to our Green County Humane Society board. >I have lived in Monroe for 30 years and have never seen so much good change for our Humane Society. They are doing events in our county, they look professional when they are doing the events and such good ideas. The St. Paddy's Parade was just a great event for the people of our town. It brought much laughter that we need now. The dogs and people dress-up was a great idea. Hope it's an annual event. Good luck, and keep up the good work. You board members are great. - Jill Johnson, Monroe>
