A barb to the hack who's got nothing better than complain about the school district mailing out schedules. If you're so upset did you call the district and if so did you actually tell them your name? Is this garbage of raising your fist in the air and railing against stupid nonsense some sort of cheap ploy to rile up the masses? If so it didn't work. The referendum was a few years ago and the school district has done a pretty good job of keeping the costs down. This is just some blowhard who has nothing better to do let alone actually take the initiative and call the school district themselves. If you're so darn smart why don't you come up with a plan that meets all state and local guidelines that can assure that all the information is received by the parents. Remember not all folks have computers or Internet. - T. Wilkens

A barb to the "disgruntled ballplayers" who barbed the Monticello Police Department last week. First, everyone complains that they're not doing their job, then they complain when they do. The lines may have been faded, but they were there - plenty of people had no problem seeing them. I'm giving a blossom to the Monticello Police Department, for doing their job for once. - Anonymous

A huge bouquet of blossoms to Representative Brett Davis, Mayor Bill Ross, the American Legion and all the businesses who participated in honoring our veterans for Patriotic Sunday at First Baptist Church of Monroe. The businesses include Garden Deli, Subway, Cousins, Kwik Trip, Red Apple, Pic 'N Save, Great Clips, Barbers II, Taco Bell, Burger King, McDonald's, Pomps, Monroe Cleaners, Fiesta Cancun, Cenex, Farm & Fleet, YMCA, Martin's Sporting Goods, Chocolate Temptations, Schultz Pharmacy, Open Door, Vince's Pizza, Radio Shack, Culver's, Alphorn Ford and World Buffet. We could not have done as much without your help. - Matt Spoonhour

A barb to Frustrated Parent. You're frustrated? The $1.05 cost to mail each envelop is not the problem with the Monroe School District Summer School. The problem is the total cost of the program, PERIOD. Summer schools started to help students that were lagging in their studies to catch up with their class, a very worthwhile effort to keep students from having to repeat a grade. However it seems that math, English, science and other core subjects have evolved to clowning, fishing and other games and recreational activities. You did not mention which classes your three children were enrolled in. While I certainly do not mind paying taxes for our schools, I do mind paying for what has become very expensive childcare services. It also does not matter what funding may come from state and/or federal funds, It's still our money. - An even more frustrated taxpayer

Seven long-stemmed blossoms to the seven restaurants that participated in the "Take A Bite Out Of Cancer" campaign for The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Green County. The Glarner Stube, Puempels Olde Tavern, Swiss Alps, Heritage House, Suisse Haus, and Vince's were the gracious hosts for this one-day event. On this day they gave their time and donated a portion of the day's proceeds to help fight the disease of cancer, while showing support for those of Green County that have cancer. And a blossom to all that ate at one of these restaurants, on that day, to show support for the community.
Multiple blossoms to all involved in an idea to pay tribute to our Green County honorary co-chairs for the Relay For Life this year. The American Cancer Society has a coloring book which is titled "Jacob Has Cancer, his friends want to help." The Green County schools were contacted and most agreed to have the grade school students color these pages. Swiss Colony reproduced the pages and Pizza Hut donated a coupon to each participating student as a thank you. Middle school students of Green County were given the opportunity to produce print advertisements for the relay. The Monroe Times has been running these ads daily. It is fun to see the talent of these young people which comes alive in print. The high schools were offered the chance for teams of students to work with radio ads for WEKZ; what an opportunity. These students created their own scripts and did a great professional job. Thank you to the schools which took to the time to allow the students to undertake this project for the Green County Relay For Life. The schools involved were Black Hawk, St. Victor's, Monroe, Albany, Juda and Monticello. Juda and Monticello participated in all three parts of the project - the coloring pages, The Monroe Times ads and WEKZ spots. The coloring pages and middle schools ads will be displayed at the Relay, which will be starting at 4 p.m. June 25-26, at the Monroe High School track. The pages will be on the fence around the track to show support for Brayden Lincicum, a 10-year-old from Juda, and Monsignor Campion the 2010 honorary chairs. What a wonderful county to live where these individual businesses (Swiss Colony, Pizza Hut, The Monroe Times and WEKZ) came together to do something special for an event designed to help improve the lives of individual residents. Blossoms don't seem enough. Thank you. - Dee Miller

A beautiful blossom to the Monroe Summer school. My kids are having so much fun. The first day seemed confusing, but there was someone on every corner to help guide us where we needed to go. My son did get lost on the first day. He was redirected because of the stickers sent to me before the program started. Great job organizing, great teachers and staff.
A beautiful blossom to the staff, and the life guards. You guys are doing a wonderful job. Words cannot express the concern, effort and care you put into helping all the kids learn to swim. Barb, at the front door, I just want to give you a hug every time I see you. I love your smile, kindness and how organized you are. Thank you. - A very happy mom
