A blossom to the Green County Fall Nationals Truck and Tractor Pull. You are, without a doubt, big-time angels. You are not just Christmas-time angels, but 24-7 angels coming to the aid of our community. All of Green County benefits from your acts of kindness. I personally feel the need to apologize for the person who signed his/her self as "disgusted citizen." This uninformed person wrote a barb to you on May 14. The concern was because you had delivered 11,000 pounds of food to only one food pantry. I guess that person doesn't know the facts. I myself know that when you deliver that much food to one place, it is divided up with other food pantries in Green County. For the most part, Monroe is served very well. It brings comfort to know that so many are being fed through the generosity of your sponsors, workers, and volunteers. I congratulate you for many jobs well done. If I knew the "disgusted citizen," I think I might say "don't bite the hand that could be feeding/helping your or your family, neighbors and friends at some time down the road." We all want smooth sailing and the best to be had but nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. - Gloria Hendrickson
I would like to send a barb to The Monroe Clinic for the location they chose to build the new hospital. Recently, I was at a doctor's appointment and was in an exam room in the clinic building facing the new hospital. To my surprise, the construction workers in the new hospital could see right in the window of my room. This was embarrassing and made me feel very uncomfortable. You would have thought they considered privacy issues before they built the new hospital so close to the clinic. -Embarrassed Patient
A blossom: Our world and all it composes begins in the mind and actions of watching others' extraction of good, an excitement as rich as watching the golden threads casting a path across the waters at sunset. I look at those about me where I reside and thank God for his cloak of softness and comfort at a time in life when it is so hungrily accepted, our senior years. Years when one of the most important numbers on our phone list is our local clinic. And what brings neighbors closer than an emergency? We face-off emotionally without reservation. To those caring individuals, thank you for being there when I needed help the most: Dr. Maxwell and his staff and Twining Valley residents Jean Glasgow, Phyllis Lentz, Elvira Cuevas, and Phyllis Wegan. - D.J. Bright
First let me state how much respect I have for first responders as these brave men and women are the ones who run into the fire to protect and save our lives. Saying that, I have to respectfully barb the Monroe Police Department for its continued failure to address the traffic issue on 16th Avenue. I have called the department twice within the last six weeks or so and stopped and talked to an officer about this issue only a few weeks back. Fifteen to 20 cars daily are going down the wrong way on 16th Avenue since the construction has begun. At least five cars do the same thing on 17th on a daily basis as well. These were one-way roads before and still are as of now. I see this out of my home office daily, and just don't want to see anyone injured. Nothing has happened in terms of a response from the police therefore I submitted this to the paper. Thank you and God Bless America! - Rob McCarthy
A huge blossom to Studio M and all of the dancers that participated in the recital over the weekend. Everybody did an excellent job. There were some very talented dancers on the stage!- Anonymous
I would like to put out a big blossom to the people of Monroe, the people at Swiss Colony, the American Legion and so many more who have supported us with prayers and packages over the past year during our deployment to Iraq. I and the rest of us in the 1/147th Aviation Battalion are appreciate all the support and well wishes sent our way. I would like to say thank you to all the people who have helped my wife and children during this time we have been apart and finally to say see you all soon. - SSG Brian Cook, 1/147th Aviation Battalion. Formerly in Iraq now back in the USA and soon to be home in Wisconsin.
A huge barb to the gas stations in Monroe - everyone else has gas for $3.61 or $3.62 - except Monroe, where gas is still $3.79. Stop gouging us ... get your prices down where they should be - or more people like me will stop buying gas at all in Monroe. You all want folks to buy local - but you want them to pay the highest prices in the area. I say "No way" on my way out of town to get gasoline. - Anonymous
Family Promise of Green County would like send out blossoms to Jimmy John's for its wonderful fund-raising event and to Luecke's Diamond Center for its sponsorship. The money raised will help homeless families of Green County. Thank you to everyone that supported this event! - Dawn Dischler, Secretary, Family Promise of Green County
A big blossom to all the retiring county workers for all their years of dedicated service. Thanks for all your hard, and too often unsung, good work, and dealing with the public. But the fear now is that, with the retirement of only three department heads, we're losing 85 years of institutional knowledge at the local level, plus losing their contacts and familiarity with those who can help us at the state level. These are not easily replaced.
A large sharp barb to those in the Legislature, and now four on State Supreme Court, for failing to abide by Open Meetings Law requirements. Wisconsin always used to be known for clean state government, where rules applied to all. Our county boards have been required to rescind/ revote at properly posted meetings when they have "innocently" flubbed on this requirement. (Define "innocent.") Should state government be held to any lesser standard??
Another Barb to all those who use the sham "running for president" as a means to boost their TV show ratings and speaking engagement fees, including those running a casino into bankruptcy (how does that occur?), or resigning an elected state office to become TV personalities. - M.E. McKnight
Sounds like B Mee must have gotten a ticket - perhaps that is why he or she is so upset with Monroe PD. Fred Kelley does a great job managing his department anyone who knows him knows that is the case. The man works long hours and takes very little vacation time. I drive this route every day and have not seen the things that B Mee claims. So a huge blossom to the Monroe PD. Fred you do a great job and so do your officers. Keep up the great work. People like B Mee write uneducated rants in the newspaper cause they have nothing else to do. - Anonymous
A huge blossom to everyone who helped with and donated to the Gavin Breadon Memorial Swim Meet, especially Marge and the rest of the Monroe Park & Recreation Department. Also, a blossom to Heartland Graphics for another great shirt this year. - Breadon Family
A blossom to those state (college-educated, mostly) legislators who understand the relationship between state aids and local economic health. According to the Congressional Budget Office, a $1 cut from a household's income has the effect of $2 less spent in the local community ("multiplier effect"), since lower-income households spend nearly all they make. Cutting state school aids would have a similar effect, especially since Lafayette County is one of the lowest per capita income areas in the state. Taking more teacher, nurse, and county worker pay out of Lafayette Co., to go to Madison, Milwaukee, & even out-of-state health ins. firms, has an extremely negative impact. Since we're mostly agricultural, it's even worse with fuel prices rising. - Anonymous
