Blossoms & Barbs: Feb. 14, 2009

A blossom to Coach Curtis Brown and the Juda GBB players for recognizing Paige Butler on scoring her 1,000th point on their home court and honoring her with the game ball. Another blossom to the Juda GBB players who came to the Black Hawk/Barneveld game and donated (out of their own pockets) to the Shoot for a Cure benefit held Saturday night. A third blossom to the area teams who have honored Black Hawk BBB Coach Mortimer at their games. Sportsmanship! That's what high school sports are all about. - A Black Hawk parent

A huge barb to the Monroe Clinic for letting Dr. Turek go. How dare you take away my and others freedom of choice by letting him go? Since he still has his license to practice medicine his patients (aka paying customers) should decide this and not some male CEO who I'm pretty sure isn't' a patient of his. Here's a thought, "maybe the CEO should be next." I believe the people have spoken. Why won't the Monroe Clinic listen? I'm going to miss Dr. Turek as he is a top notch doctor and man. - Donielle Wellnitz (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes.com)

A very big, huge blossom to the Monroe Clinic for letting Dr. Turek go. Without this decision, I would be forced to continue letting you rip me off for my health care needs because I will only see Dr. Turek. It'll be great to be able to take my business elsewhere now that I can't see my physician anymore (who was the ONLY reason I was still choosing the Monroe Clinic for my health care). So, from the bottom of my heart, and near empty bank account, thank you! - Happy Patient (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes.com)

I would like to extend a huge blossom to The Monroe Clinic/Hospital. On Feb. 2, I had been admitted for a routine colonoscopy, and like many, I was a little "uneasy" about this particular procedure. Once in the door, I was treated like a family member. Dr. Rikkers, and every member of his staff treated me like royalty. The procedure was a snap, and over before I knew it. I was even served a nice breakfast before my release! Thank you all for such wonderful care. You are angels on earth!! - Mary Jo Hendrickson (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes.com)

A blossom to TMC. I know the real reason they let him go. - Insider (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes.com)

I would like to add another huge barb to the Monroe Clinic. I moved from Monroe 7 years ago but continued with the Clinic because of Dr. Turek. I feel that the Clinic has decided money is more important that patient care. I will be leaving the Clinic and if I am lucky Dr. Turek will end up in a great clinic near me and I can continue with his excellent care. - Sue (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes.com)

A barb to WEKZ for not putting the Monroe boys basketball game against DeForest on the air. I wanted to listen to the game, but I couldn't find it anywhere. After calling a friend who was there, they said the only station covering the game was 1670 AM out of Madison - so I tuned in to that. Those announcers were pretty good and the game went along fine. However, I still can't feel anything less than slighted because the hometown radio crew wasn't at a Friday night home game. Was there a better game going on? Like the Black Hawk/Argyle girls blowout? When you think up your marketing plan, wouldn't you want to hit up your biggest market? I've let it slide that Monroe is usually designated to 1260 AM, which no one outside of the city limits can pick up, whereas all the other little schools get the quality FM channels. If this were happening in Illinois and Freeport had to listen to a game on 1570 because Scales Mound and Eastland were on FM, someone would probably get fired. So why is it so different with Monroe? It would be nice for the hometown team to actually care about the hometown team. That hasn't happened since the turn of the millennium. - Proud Cheesemaker fan (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes.com)

A huge barb to TDS for forcing this ridiculous GMail on their customers! It's awful. - Mad as hornet in a fireplace (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes.com)

Blossoms to the Monticello boys for a game well-played, and a huge bouquet to the student section. These fans were on their feet throughout the game, cheering their team on to victory, at all times remaining positive and fun-loving. I never heard a negative remark from them, even when referees made calls that had parents muttering expletives. However, a barb to the Barneveld students who felt it appropriate to take up the chant of "Ponies Suck." It's never fun to watch your team lose, but both teams played an excellent game and should hold their heads high, and fans who resort to name-calling and other negative jeers toward the opposing team deserve nothing less than to be removed from the game and earn their team a technical foul. - Proud to be a Pony (submitted and posted online at www.themonroetimes. com)
