Blossoms & Barbs: December 24, 2011

I would like to send an enormous barb to "Had enough." You have got to be kidding me. Who are you to say the schools shouldn't be offering sports or extra-curricular activities? These things help promote a healthy lifestyle for children as well as show them responsibility. The parents are the one dishing out the extra cash for equipment and supplies because they enjoy their kids playing sport. And the farmers have taken enough from you? Where do you get your groceries? Your dairy? Your eggs? The farmers had nothing to do with that did they? You should be ashamed of yourself. - Disgusted Citizen

A barb on the way the recall signature process is taking place. The recall effort itself is fine in that the law allows an elected official to be recalled. The problem is the verification of names process. As recall sheets are collected, they should immediately be turned in to the Government Accountability Board (GAB) to start to verify the signatures that the person exists at the address given, etc. To dump 700,000 or more names onto the GAB and then limit the amount of time to verify the names is ridiculous. The GAB has already said that names like Mickey Mouse, etc., won't be checked, they will just make sure the paperwork is correct. That's just wrong. Every name should be verified and once any duplicates, nonexistent, etc. names have been removed, if there is enough signatures, then the recall should take place. Secondly, teachers should not be passing around recall sheets during school hours as it is against the rule and highly unprofessional and just plain wrong. If you want to collect names, set up a table off of school grounds and anyone wanting to sign can do so. Tired of the political games. - Anonymous

A blossom to the Swiss Valley H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) chapter. This year they have again remembered our local veterans with their generous year-end donations. With the economy being in the state that it is, and with charitable giving going down because of it, it is nice that local groups are able to put on fundraisers in able to be able to continue to assist with local causes. Thank you. - Green County Veterans Service Office

A big bunch of blossoms to Sherri Fiduccia, Jimmy, and Jeremiah from Monroe Auto Sales for the wonderful Christmas party they put on last Saturday. Sherri had her large Clydesdale horse there for pictures with Santa, and her two miniature ponies, Pancho and Lefty, also on hand for pictures and petting. Santa and a special elf were there, along with two kittens, and several dogs. Another bunch of blossoms to all those who donated baked items for the bake sale, and more blossoms for special photographer, Nicolette Dreikosen, who was on hand for taking and printing out pictures. The day was a complete success, and almost $600 was taken in from the bake sale and donation jars for the Green County Humane Society. The cats and dogs at the shelter thank everyone who participated and want to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas. - Cheryl, Millie, and Geri

A big Christmas bouquet of blossoms to those who take the time to make this season a merry one for others. An especially large bouquet to the "Burger King" Santa and Mrs. Claus who put a lot of personal time and finances into Christmas. - Anonymous

A huge bouquet of blossoms to the Juda Girls Club and their parents. This group went door to door spreading Christmas cheer by their glorious caroling. Thank you for reminding us all for the reason of the season and brightening our community members' evening. - Anonymous

Another barb to Congress for being asleep at the wheel: The reason for the P.O.'s financial worries is largely due to Congress slamming the Post Office with paying a huge bill forward to cover nearly all future retirements. The United States has some of the lowest-cost postage in the world. And politicians say, "we need more jobs," which we do, but not much is done about it unless by Main Street mom and pop businesses. So how is it reasonable to close a Post Office like Woodford (now nationally recognized as a Black Hawk War battle site) that provides at least a couple jobs with decent pay, insurance, and retirement benefits? We lose those jobs locally, and perhaps good workers transfer out of the area. The local tax base, both sales and income, declines if that happens. We need legislators to act to reduce this extreme and unwarranted cost on the P.O., when other firms are not treated comparably. - M.E. McKnight

A great big bouquet of blossoms goes out to the secret Santa who helped pay for my son's lay-away. God bless you and your wonderful generosity - you are truly a gift from God. May you all have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year! - Anonymous
