Blossoms & Barbs: Dec. 20, 2008

A barb against those who do not have the guts >to sign or have their name printed. I have not just submitted barbs. I submitted a blossom that was printed. My philosophy is that the squeaky wheel gets the oil and nothing was every accomplished by silence.

A barb against those who do not clear the plowed snow >from the end of the sidewalk.  The rest of the sidewalk may be clean as a whistle, but the plowed snow has not been cleared. Ask yourself if your grandma can hurdle that plowed snow blocking the sidewalk without being seriously injured. I seriously doubt it. Ignoring it is an injury waiting to happen that may cost you thousands of dollars if someone is injured because of it.

A barb against those who do not keep their sidewalks clear >of ice and snow. I do not mind walking on snow. In fact, I prefer to do so because it results in less wear on the soles of my shoes, as long as there is no ice underneath. I do not like trying to wade through snow. From filing citizen's complaints against those who do not clear their sidewalks over the past few years, it is usually the same dozen or so properties I have filed a dozen or so complaints against each winter. Either the Police or the Public Works departments aren't giving out citations to them or fines mean nothing to them. If fines mean nothing to them, then the city council needs to add another incentive, such as jail time. - Dave Searles>

A blossom to the law enforcement> of Green County for the Shop With a Cop program, to those who wrapped the presents and to the people who made Christmas goodies. Also, a special thanks to Officer Noah of the Monroe Police Department and Ms. Betty for helping Heidi with shopping. - Diane West>

I'd like to send a barb to those who feel free to throw their sidewalk snow out >on the street, making it hard to park on alternate sides after the plows have gone through. Please place the extra moisture on the grass. - Anonymous>

Here is a big barb to the Monroe school district. >Why don't we have holiday/winter programs for our students anymore? It could be one big program for all the elmentaries. One evening for the kids to shine for the parents and family. Now that I have grandkids, I want to be able to see them. We pay enough for them to go to school, but yet they can't have one program that is worth seeing. Fun for kids and families. Sad, sad. - Lynn>

A blossom to the Monroe Middle School and their band directors >for the awesome concert they put on Thursday night. The weather held out for everyone to get home safe and I heard nothing but good comments on the performance.

A gigantic bright red bouquet of blossoms to the Monroe Middle School Project World students, teachers Deb Freitag and Nadine Whiteman, >and all the people who donated blood as part of their project. Awesome! What a great gift to give this time of year, or any time, for that matter. Good job everyone!

Another large blossom to the Monroe High School students> involved with the Winter Fest. Excellent way to raise money for many of our local charities!

A blossom to all the people >who still continue to donate to the local food pantries and food drives. This is the season of giving, so let's help out those less fortunate and make their Christmas season much brighter.

And finally, a blossom to all the areas road crews >doing the best job they can to keep our streets and roads clean. Give them some space to do their job, and, please, slow down. - Jeff Ditzenberger, Monticello>
