A huge blossom to my neighbor, Bobbi Jo Robertson, >for coming to my aid and assistance when I had an accident at my home recently. Additionally, blossoms to the Green County EMS personnel, Green County Sheriff's Department, Monroe Clinic Hospital emergency room staff, Monroe Clinic Hospital fourth floor staff, and Dr. Lance Sathoff and co-workers.> I am so thankful for your prompt response, concern, caring and above all your professional skills as you helped me that evening and thereafter. Again, thank you all so very much. - Jerry Casselberry, Monroe>
I'm a Monroe township resident and I'd like to give a blossom to Sherri Fiduccia. >She took the time on a hot Saturday, Aug. 15, to get our opinions about the nursing home referendum. She stood at our township's trash site all morning talking with the residents of Monroe township. I'll bet you that out of the 30 Green County Board supervisors, she was the only one asking what the residents want - raise taxes or not. Guess what? Most feel the same way I feel - No! No! Find another way. They did not ask the residents about spending $12 million for the justice center. Why bother now for over $1 million? We did not need the justice center. They should have thought about Pleasant View at that time. That $12 million sure could go a long way now. Put $12 million into our elderly residents rather than our overpaid judge that does nothing. A super wonderful lady that Sherri Fiduccia is, thinking about us first. - Monroe township resident >
A big blossom to employees at Pleasant View >to help keep residents at the home. Thanks, Peggy, for getting petitions started. Help is needed to keep that home going. No one knows when they'll need a place like that to be so well taken care of. Many dollars have been contributed for other things in Monroe. Why, when something like this comes up and raising taxes is mentioned, is it such an awful big deal? It's good to know we have such a place to go for excellent care when we no longer can care for ourselves. I would think our paper would give more encouragement toward the nursing home. A barb to them >for not doing so. - Anonymous>
I'd like to give a barb to the Monroe City Council >for writing up a new job description for a city administrator at a salary of $76,000 to $90,000 with benefits. I don't believe, with the economy in the shape it's in, that we need a city administrator with that kind of salary. Also, that it has to be an attorney excludes 99.9 percent of the people in the county from running for the job. That includes all the council members, doctors, media people, most successful farmers and businessmen, and teachers. I think the whole thing is illegal because it's a conflict of interest. It would make it pretty hard for someone to challenge the city administrator if he's a lawyer. I've always believe that our Constitution thought we should have a three-legged stool challenging each other. It might not be the fastest, but it's the most fair to us taxpayers. I could say a good case could be made that we don't have a three-legged stool, or even a two-legged stool, but a one-legged stool. - LaVern F. Isely, Monroe>
A blossom and thanks to all who registered >to be on the map for the August City-Wide Garage Sale. It is you who make the citywide garage sales possible. The $500 worth of advertising we do in area newspapers and the radio stations is paid for by your registration fees. Without you, we could not have a Monroe City-wide Garage Sale. Thanks to those who included future ideas and suggestions on their registration forms. We appreciate your thoughts. Thanks to those who are garage sale shoppers. Thanks to those businesses who allow us to place maps on their counters for people to pick up. We appreciate the grocery stores and gas station/convenience stores give up counter space for the maps. We have a new idea for October - we could have a citywide sale in the middle of October to promote winter items, Halloween costumes and holiday decorations. If we have 50 sellers registered by Oct. 1, we could plan on having a citywide sale on Oct. 16-17 (Friday and Saturday). Our registration forms would have categories to apply to this sale. Sellers could choose to have their sale on both Friday and Saturday, or Friday or Saturday only. A code would indicate which they are. Of course, if we do not have 50 registered sellers by Oct. 1, we would refund the $10 registration fees paid and plan for spring to be our next citywide sale. Watch for upcoming information on an October sale possibility. - Tom and Rita Farris and Chris Vincent>
A huge blossom to Monroe. >What a fantastic place to live, work and shop! Monroe, Wis., is a unique place to live with many of the community seeming to work together to better its living conditions. With the streetscape project under way, and many of its locally-owned retailers undergoing changes both outside of the retail stores as well as some environmental changes within. It is important to remember that owners of local businesses spend the money they earn on other local purchases and projects. In most cases, a dollar spent locally is just put directly back into the community it was spent in. As many outside business come into town, most of this money leaves town with very little benefiting its community. As a member of the community, I want to remind everyone to give local retail business and service business a chance before looking into other alternatives. Thanks to everyone who supports our community - Dave Gombosi "The Shack" >
A huge barb to the Green County Board. >After reading the paper the other night, I began to think of the consequences that the new Justice Center, which has no income, has caused our taxpayers. This is one building at this time of stress, we did not need. Now supervisors claim they want to raise taxes for the Pleasant View Nursing Home. This is a major necessity in our lives right now. It does accumulate some income, but not enough to support the home. We senior citizens need this facility a lot more than we needed the Justice Center. You took our tax dollars for that, now you want to raise our taxes and tax us right out of our homes. I think you need to wake up. When will you stop spending our tax dollars needlessly? - Barb>
A barb to the person who doesn't want to barb >but did anyway. Maybe you should go to the state fair and complain there, too. If you think the Green County Fair is expensive, fair food at the state fair is double the cost. I bet you make more than a lot of people in this town. Having worked at the fair for several years, it irks me that the biggest complainers are those who can afford to go and probably go on a nice trip each summer also. Those people that are scraping by never complain about the price and happily go and enjoy the fair. So in essence, this is a barb to all you complainers. >Think of the 4-H and FFA kids and their commitment for five hot days. - J. Griffin>
Great big huge blossoms to the wonderful lady >who has made the entrance into Browntown so beautiful! It brightens my day every morning, and again in the evening on the way home! Thanks! - Swiss Miss>
A huge barb to the Lafayette County road department. >I was traveling toward Wiota, when around the corner there was a county truck just sitting there. There were no signs indicating they were working or nothing. If I hadn't been paying attention, there would have definitely been an accident. And could you believe right in Wiota a county dump truck was sitting there and in the opposite lane there was another county truck just sitting there talking to other workers? I'm glad there wasn't an emergency. One more group on the way back to Gratiot was blocking the road again! Where are the MEN WORKING signs? Maybe because they ARE NOT WORKING. Don't get me wrong, in general I totally respect these hard workers. Their lives are on the line every day, but how about some respect for the motorists, as well? - Dawn Moore>
