Blossoms & Barbs: Aug. 15, 2009

I would like to send a huge barb to all motorists >who did not "move over" while traveling on Highway 11-81 on Thursday afternoon (Aug. 6). I counted 13 motorists in a five-minute period, cars, trucks and semis, that endangered our safety as we were along the side of the road. All three of our vehicles had emergency lights flashing and there were also orange cones set out. If you go to the Wis. D.O.T. Web site, you can read all about the "move over law," although you would think that common sense would tell you to "move over" or at least slow down when you see safety vehicles along the road. This law requires drivers to shift lanes or slow down in order to provide a "safety zone" for a squad car, ambulance, fire truck, tow truck or highway maintenance vehicle that is stopped on the side of the road with its warning lights flashing. Wake up, drivers, stop endangering the lives of the people who risk theirs to rescue stranded motorists or are just trying to do their job, which involves working along roads. Jeez! - Move Over Law>

A huge blossom to the members of the Green County Fair Board >for all of their countless hours before, during and after the Green County Fair this year. I, too, spent many hours at the fair this year and was so impressed with how clean and how well organized everything was. From the cattle barns to the midway, everything was so very neat and clean. So nice to see the flowers around the midway to make everything look so welcoming. If you were to walk around the fairgrounds about 6 a.m., you would not believe all the people working to get everything all cleaned up from the night before. Too many times our fair board only hears the complaints and negativity about the fair. If you see a Green County Fair Board member, be sure and thank them. I am sure they are already working on the fair for next year - it is not a one-week commitment from them. They are working on this the year-round! - Bonnie Gerner, New Glarus>

A barb to those picking on Jan Lefevre. >Get off her back. With all of the nonsense going on in America, why pick on someone who is doing the job she was elected to do? - MJJ>

A blossom to the Monroe swimming pool lifeguards >Cassie, Liz, Kyle, Linda, Brianna and Tyler, who administered first aid to me after getting smacked in the face with a basketball while in the pool on Tuesday with the Cheesemakers. The young adults were very attentive and professional. They stayed calm and knew what to do. - Shelley M. Zimmerman>

A barb to banks >for where they are putting their stamps on the front of returned checks, for those that are returned for accounts closed, or insufficient funds. The stamp is almost always put over the person's phone number. This is sometimes the only way we have to try to contact them and collect. Why make it harder on us? Put your stamp lower on the check, not over the vital information. - A Business Owner>

A blossom to John Waelti >for his well-written comments published in the Aug. 4 Monroe Times. His intelligent and common-sense attitude should be a standard for all of us, especially our elected officials. - Glen A. Spring, Albany>

First of all, a blossom to all the positive feedback >on the Green County Fair. It's great to see! Unlike its title, our fair is not owned and operated by the county! How many of the people with all their complaints have stock in the fair and/or donate any time to help make the fair a success? Do you also realize the board works all year to put one week together? The fair has always been my family's vacation since we lived on a dairy farm and belonged to 4-H. I wonder how many people on the fair board are in it for the money. I bet not too many ... because they love the fair and want to see it continue. No matter how hard the board tries to please everyone, there will always be someone to find fault, most likely the people who complain the most. I do donate time and love the fair. I want to see the fair continue. We have a great community, so let's be more positive, and why not pitch in and say, "I was a part of that." It will make you feel good! - A fair lover>

A blossom to the workmen on the Square >for helping two older ladies with canes cross the street that's being repaired and getting them safely into the Monroe Medical Equipment store. Thank you. Your help was most appreciated. - Anonymous in Monroe>

A barb to whomever coordinated the dedication >of the Revolutionary War veteran at Shook Cemetery. Thanks to our now-deceased 50-year member, Vern Elmer, of our post, who put in many hours into getting a new headstone for Veteran Bailey. Also, the Monticello Post has always put on the flags on the veterans' graves for Memorial Day. We also do three other cemeteries. We were not even invited to the dedication. Instead, they had the Argyle Legion there. (Thank heaven at least some legion was invited.) However, Argyle isn't even in our district, as our Green County commander was also upset, as he wasn't notified, either. Also, we think there are more than 20 broken headstones in a big pile in the northeast corner of the cemetery. They also should be repaired or have new ones put in place. - Members of Monticello Legion Post 256>

A long, sharp barb to the lowlife> who threw the chocolate lab off a bridge up north (Times, Aug. 5). People like this are works of the devil and should burn in hell. It's a known fact that animal abusers are a threat to society, especially close family members. This person needs to be convicted and put in the slammer for a long time.

A blossom to Rep. Andy Jorgensen, >D-Fort Atkinson, for introducing "thrill-kill" legislation. But he needs to stick to his intentions and not cave into hunt clubs that may try to soften his argument. - Bobette Traul, Monroe>

A barb goes to the Salary and Personnel Committee >for considering tailoring the administrator/attorney job description to a specific individual. According to state and federal law, such a practice is illegal and could lead to a lawsuit against the City of Monroe. - Anonymous>

A barb to the people >that made the decision to not put a turn arrow in the set of stoplights at 8th Street and 3rd Avenue. With Farm and Fleet, Culvers, Pick 'n Save, and a gas station at that corner, it is crazy to have the amount of traffic waiting to turn with all the oncoming thru traffic. Somebody wasn't thinking when those were put in, or else they haven't ever driven down there and wanted to turn. - Anna Zettle >
