Blossoms & Barbs: April 21, 2012

A huge blossom to the Easter Bunny, Jesse Anderson, who made the Easter Egg Hunt extra special for many children on that day. - Monroe Parks and Recreation Staff

A big barb to the City BPW, the street department and the railroad. Fix the RR crossing on Wisconsin 69! Don't just put up "bump" signs. This has gone on long enough and also set the timing on the traffic lights to "flow" the traffic through town on the highway. You have the primary settings for the cross streets. The city wanted that "bypass" to go through town, now make it right. - Anonymous

To the two people concerned about the person who ran over a black and white cat without stopping: Granted, the person could have stopped, but by city code, if you run over a dog, cat or other pet, the operator is to call the police - you do not need to take the animal to a vet as you suggested. The biggest barb should go to the person who allowed the cat to run at large. If the cat is off the owner's property, it is to be on a leash or appropriately restrained. Dog owners in Monroe are following the city code for the most part; however, many cat owners leave them run at large. We need to enforce the leash law for cats as well as dogs. -Anonymous

A huge, thorny barb to the person who contacted the city about grass clippings in front of our house. I wish I had so much time to worry about some grass clippings. Next time, be an adult and tell us directly instead of running off to the alderperson. - Anonymous

Red, white and blue blossoms to the Badger Honor Flight on April 21, 2012. The "Greatest Generation" of World War II veterans toured their memorial in Washington D.C. with dignity, honor and devotion to detail. What a tribute. - Kenneth C. Zeitler, Sr. (veteran) and Charles C. Zeitler (guardian)

First let me give applause and a blossom to Mr. Mike Sanders for the beautiful addition to The Monroe Clinic. But now the barb is what a waste it is to see the "old part" of the hospital sitting there. In addition to that, this cost a lot of money and rumor has it some employees, long-time employees, were let go. Was this so you could hire new ones cheaper? Makes you wonder walking into the Clinic, the employees do not look as happy as they once did. Your "team," throw them in mandatory uniforms and said there you go, here are the changes go with it. You have the space, you have the employees, and great physicians, please use them and make them happy again before you lose them. - Concerned Monroe Clinic patient

A bouquet of blossoms and a big thank you for the great picture of Rev. Tom Chopp with Sen. Santorum in the April 9, 2012 edition of the paper. It's great to see that Rev. Chopp is still in our community. I have missed seeing his bright smile and him cheerfully greeting all at the Clinic. I wondered what happened to him and I am glad to see he is still a part of our community. Blossoms again for Chaplain Tom's picture demonstrating his warmth and welcoming Sen. Santorum to Wisconsin. - Anonymous supporter

Another bouquet of blossoms goes to Tom Neumann, MS, RN for his letter to the editor about the new hospital's disturbing and offensive ads for "hotel" vs. hospital and his support of the nurses who are providing the care but expected to be concierges, maids, bell boys, etc., instead of the fine caring and knowledgeable professionals they are. The "hotel" mentality must be a part of the "look-alike" clothing now worn at the hospital. And a bigger bouquet to UW Health for bringing quality and professional health care closer to Green County with their new Family Practice just north of New Glarus. At last, a place where care is still part of good health and is a demonstration of being good stewards of all health care dollars - Anonymous

I agree with Jeremy Levinson, the Democrats' attorney, when he says of the fake Democrats, "This isn't about what they are. It's about what they're doing. If the GAB puts these folks on the ballot, it's going to be ruling that some information it requires ... can be factually false." I'd like to give the GAB attorney, Michael Haas, a barb for letting them do it. Hasn't he ever heard of telling them to run as an independent, where they belong? Politics has come to a new low when they let Republicans run as fake Democrats and that's something our judicial system should have to figure out before the election and the media should have pointed it out as well. - LaVern Iselys

A barb to the Shopping News. It is the third week we have not received the Shopping News and I don't know why when we have always received it before. I'm sure the businesses that advertise in the paper will be noticing a drop in sales if they knew people weren't seeing their sales. - Anonymous

A barb to Mayor Tom Barrett's campaign ad on TV. He states in the ad that Wisconsin lost the most jobs of any state in the U.S. I Googled the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and its March 8, 2012 release states Wisconsin's unemployment rate went from 7.7 percent in January of 2011 to 6.9 percent in January of 2012, which according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics is in the top 20 states in the U.S. for improvement in unemployment. What I haven't heard from any Democrat running for Governor, or senate for that matter, is their plan on how to balance the $3.6 billion deficit that Walker inherited. All you hear is about how they will go back to the old days and kowtow to the unions. - Reader

A barb to Suzanne Vinmans about the fake candidates in the upcoming primary. 1. There is zero cost to taxpayers for the primaries because of fake candidates as there is already a primary in every district in the state for the governor's race including the fake Republican running. The waste of dollars is recalling a governor for balancing the budget for a change 2. The dollars being spent by the out-of-state unions far surpasses any money, if any, from the Koch Brothers. 3. As for running fake candidates being illegal, the Democrats first ran a fake candidate back in July of 2010 in an Assembly race against Bob Zieglbauer, yet this is never mentioned in news reports. The only reason there are fake candidates is to ensure that all the elections for the senate and governor will all be on the same day. - Reader
