Blossoms & Barbs: April 17, 2010

Sending out a bundle of apple blossoms to the many volunteers who are picking up the trash along the highways these past few weeks. You are the unsung heroes that help keep our corner of the earth beautiful. With Earth Day coming up on April 22, we all need to do our part to help improve our environment in whatever way we can. If everyone who has property in Green County would pick up the trash along the roadways that border their property, along with all the many volunteers who help every year, we might be able to keep ahead of the idiots who find it necessary to dispose of their bad habits in such a thoughtless way. Thanks to you, keepers of the earth. - Sheila Berrey, citizen concerned about keeping Green County attractive for us, our visitors and future residents

A blossom to Black Hawk School for winning the WIAA Sportsmanship Award. You should be very proud.

A barb to those who don't think these kids deserve their school. I'm amazed by all of the support the kids received at State, but even more amazed by lack of support for the kids and their school. I hope you are all sleeping well at night because there are many kids who are not. - BH Warrior fan

A huge bouquet of 19 blossoms is given to the Kiwanis organization of Monroe, one for each of the people who showed up at the Green County Historical Society museum complex on Saturday, April 10. These volunteers spent a total of 65 hours helping to get the museum ready for its opening on Saturday, June 5 by painting, staining, washing, vacuuming, trimming the yard, and more. The GCHS so much appreciates this great show of support. - Matt Figi

A blossom to the pet shelter and a salute to those who write up the statistics of the dogs and cats available for taking and adopting at the Monroe pet shelter. The writers describe them so well that one just wants to adopt one or two of them after reading about them. We can tell they really like their little charges very much to recognize their good points and actions. Thanks lots to you. This always livens up the Times. Thanks writers, it always gives us a fun time to read these quick "run downs" on them. (Needs action place, need some quiet item, needs to run, etc.) I'm in a nursing home and can't have a dog or cat here and besides, I'm too old to care for a pet, so I enjoy this section of the Times. Thanks again. Keep it up. - Erma Klassy

A huge blossom to the committee and volunteers of the annual Net & Ten basketball tournament. The move to the High school was a great success, and it showed in the final count. This is the big fundraiser for the high school soccer program, which is funded totally by donations. Keep the soccer interest going in Monroe, so kids have many choices to keep fit. - Joanna Griffin
