Blossoms & Barbs: April 16, 2011

A barb to The Monroe Times. Last year I sent a blossom to the office ladies of Voegeli Chevrolet for being so helpful and efficient in getting a license plate for my new van. I sent this in the same envelope with a barb to a different group of individuals. The barb was printed and the blossom was not. I assumed the blossom was not printed because the promotion of a specific business was not allowed. Imagine my surprise when I read the glowing endorsement for Gates Auto Body last week. Why does Mick McClain get preferential treatment? Does he have some connection to someone at the Times, or was there some other reason for this exclusion? Either way, I would like to send a blossom to the knowledgeable and helpful ladies at Voegeli Chevrolet, be it ever so late. - Anonymous

A blossom: This past weekend we had the opportunity to work with a great group of students from the German Exchange Club at Monroe High School. They worked with us setting up and taking down the quilt show they co-sponsored with Courthaus Quilters. They treated us with courtesy and respect. - Harvey and Elaine Klassy

A big bouquet of blossoms to the German Club at Monroe High School who worked with the Courthaus Quilters in presenting Kaleidoscope of Quilts. These students, parents, and advisors are a great example of what's good in our schools. They willingly and enthusiastically worked and helped in many ways. We also want to thank all who attended. - Courthaus Quilters

A barb: I was disappointed in the school referendum - however, the people have spoken and I commend Mr. Brown for the cuts he has instituted, but wonder why there are no cuts in the administration. We have principals, assistant principals, superintendent, athletic director, curriculum coordinator, special ed coordinators, etc., etc. I would be interested to know the total number of administration positions. Perhaps some should be combined. - Anonymous.

A barb to Dave Searles "again." The reason writers sometimes don't sign their names is the fact that some people feel boycotting businesses, etc. is the best way to deal with those that have a different opinion than themselves. I have nieces and nephews and deal with various businesses, and I don't believe that it is fair for them to possibly be punished because of the opinions that I have come out with. Why is it that when you can't repudiate the message, you go after the messenger? Who writes what, isn't what's important. The message is the important thing. Jimmy Carter isn't conservative. I hope most readers caught my sarcasm - he is about as liberal as any president and the point was a liberal taking away collective bargaining rights of federal employees 30 years ago. Gov. Walker is not trying to get rid of any unions; he is giving the workers the right to vote on retaining their union and not being forced to pay union dues if they choose not to. Why is that all I hear from the left is about workers rights, but it doesn't include their right to not pay dues or be in a union? You wrote in your earlier article about Republican stooges eliminating the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13 and 14th amendments. These articles concern slavery, one person owning another, and I stand by my statement that you are playing the race card and it is disgusting. Corporations and big business can never make us slaves to them. Now you throw in child labor laws without elaborating and that it isn't a far reach after that to slavery. Those statements are so baseless, disgusting, inflammatory and indefensible that it isn't even necessary to repudiate them. - A Taxpayer

A barb to the article written by Todd Richmond about the illegal donations. The first sentence in the article is about illegal donations to Scott Walker's campaign and it takes till the ninth paragraph to mention the donations to the assembly democratic campaign committee and Democrat Mike Sheridan. The eleventh paragraph reports Walker's campaign "promptly" returned the donations when made aware of the illegal contributions and until the 13th paragraph to state that the Democratic Assembly committee has "since" donated the money and that Democrat Mike Sheridan has given "some" of the donations to charity. This goes to show the bias in media reporting these days. A majority of readers only read one or two paragraphs and would have gone away with the opinion that Walker's campaign was the only one involved. A truly unbiased article would have stated that both Walker's campaign and democratic campaigns received illegal contributions in the first paragraph and then continue on elaborating on the other issues. - Tired of biased reporting
