Barbs to Monroe businesses posting "no guns." Why? This is a blatant announcement to any criminal with a mind to pack heat that your store has nobody to protect you, the things in the store, or they themselves as a patron of your store. The criminals are told they can walk in and do what they want without fear of someone else pulling heat and protecting everything. It's not the honest people with guns you have to worry about, people ... wake up! - Anonymous

A blossom to the Juda Fore Fathers and Juda Zion Methodist Church Sunday School classes for their generosity during the holiday season for our students and families. - Juda School District

A huge barb to all the parents who put themselves first and their kids second. We're facing the problem of losing so many great youth programs because these parents won't take time to volunteer and help out. Playing video games, watching TV, or going to the bar should not take precedence over your kids' programs. Get off your deadbeat butt and do something for your children. - Anonymous

A barb to the City of Monroe - you did it again. Why must you always remove the winter decorations off the downtown Square light posts the day after New Year's? They represent "winter" more than Christmas. By the way, where were those beautiful snowflakes that used to sit atop the poles? They were so beautiful and "showy" - much more so than the wreaths that could barely be seen at night. Our Square is so beautiful. Let's keep it that way through the winter. Every winter, as I drive through other communities, I see their "winter" decorations still beautifying their downtown areas throughout the winter. What's the matter with Monroe in removing them before "winter" barely gets started? - Anonymous

A huge blossom to Brenda, the deli manager at Pick 'n Save. She is indeed a sweet lady who cares deeply about her job and her customers. She, and her staff, always go the extra mile to make sure that your experience is indeed a pleasant one. And perhaps more importantly, when rarely something does go wrong, she is the first one to make sure that it is fixed and that her customers walk away knowing that they are valued and important. Hats off to you Brenda! Everyone in customer service could take lessons from you and your staff. Thank you for all of your hard work and caring. - Anonymous

A barb to a recent contributor. Admittedly, I'm confused. The writer asked the question, "Just how scared is Gov. Walker in being recalled?" I realize that this question was asked in reference to a proposed rule that any gathering of more than four people is a mob and would require a permit. The writer stated that they fully supported the Beloit Daily News, reported in our own paper, when it wrote "Be wary of barriers to free enterprise." It went on to say "mostly Republicans were confused as to whether they should or shouldn't stand up for the constitution and free speech." The article concluded with "The ballot box is always the right way to solve problems." Maybe I've been asleep, like Rip Van Winkle, but wasn't Gov. Walker constitutionally elected at the ballot box? Assuming that the same rules apply, to either issue, I too believe that the ballot box is always the right way to solve problems. - Anonymous

I would like to give a blossom to all those who came to Pizza Hut on Monday, Jan. 16 for The American Cancer Society. A blossom to all the Pizza Hut employees and volunteers who worked the buffet that night. - Karen Nufer

A barb to the fact that we have homelessness in our own backyard. No child should ever go hungry let alone worry about where they're going to sleep at night. These children should be loved, concentrating on schoolwork and just be kids. These families need our help. Where's the coverage? Where's the march? Where's the protest? Where's the angst and anger? The folks trying to help the families are as much heroes as are first responders as they are both trying to save lives. These folks need a permanent roof over their heads and if job training is needed, then by all means let's address it. This is a problem that has no political ties. This is a problem that can be addressed at the local level everywhere. Call your local leaders and ask what you can do to help.

Speaking of children, a barb to the constant speeding on 16th and 17th avenues. Please slow down people; there are far too many kids living in these neighborhoods to be winding it up going North or South. Note to the Monroe Police Department: When not at your locations on 9th and 13th streets, please check out these avenues in question. Anytime after 3 in the afternoon would be a great way to deter some of this action.

A blossom to the city employees of all our local municipalities. From answering a quick question, to running our city or braving the elements to clear the roads of ice and snow, I say "thank you." These are our neighbors, friends and quite possibly the most overlooked folks around. Thank you and God bless America! - Rob McCarthy

This Sunday, Jan. 22, has been designated as Sanctity of Human Life Sunday observed yearly since 1983. Therefore we would like to send a bouquet of fragrant blossoms to the Green County Care Net Pregnancy Center in Monroe and those centers nationwide who compassionately counsel women experiencing a crisis pregnancy, informing them of the intrinsic value and preciousness of the life growing in their womb. Psalm 139 records King David's prayer in part: "For You have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works." - The Wells

We would like to give a huge blossom to the mystery man who helped us out Tuesday night at the Library. My daughter and I were stuck on the ice and we had spent 30-plus minutes trying to get out with no luck. Finally I called my brother and sister-in-law to help. They came to the rescue. While helping me, the mystery man showed and got right to work pushing. He disappeared as fast as he appeared and I never got to thank him. So thank you to the mystery man. We appreciate it very much. -Anonymous
