A huge, beautiful, spirit-filled Blossom to all those that made donations last weekend at the MHS varsity cheer car wash in the Pick 'N' Save parking lot. Our squad is getting ready for an exciting season and it's made possible through donations by the fantastic members of this community. We want to send a special thank you out to the man with the red trailer for the very generous donation that helped tremendously with the purchase of our new poms. Thank you so much. - MHS Varsity Cheer

The Committee for the Class of 1961 Reunion would like to give a huge Blossom to The Heritage House Restaurant for all their help in making our 50th class reunion a success this past weekend. The food they provided was excellent and the presentation was done to perfection. The biggest blossom goes to the seven staff members who performed "over the top" to accommodate our classmates and guests. Their professionalism during the course of the evening was outstanding.

Another Blossom goes out to Kathy Watson for providing a delicious cake, which only drew praise and raves. A bouquet goes to Richard Prien and Candy Doyle for hosting the class at their farmette Friday, providing a place to relax and casually re-connect with old friends. To "Flan" at Flannigan's Shenanigans, a blossom for providing such a great spot for not only our class, but all the various groups which need a place to gather to talk and reminisce. A blossom to Tom Mitchell for leading a 2-hour walking tour, highlighting the pristine buildings and history of the city.

We would also like to give a Blossom to the staff of Turner Hall for the wonderful food served at the Sunday brunch. Finally, to our fellow classmates and spouses, some who traveled long distances to attend, whether it was their first reunion or one of the previous eight, a blossom goes to you for giving the extra effort so that we could say, "Hello, we have missed you, and we hope to meet again."

A huge bouquet of Blossoms to anyone and everyone who donated time, supplies, or money to the South Wayne Community Park foundation. Thanks to everyone who helped with Red Cracker fund raiser in any way, or attended the event. This was year 16 of hard work and fun. Thanks to the people who worked so hard to landscape the area. Those who put in the ball fields, volley ball court, basket ball court, walking track, bridge, playground equipment, score boards, and most of all the Pavilion. Thanks especially to the volunteer contractors who added their expertise. The dream those four men had 16 years ago is slowly becoming a reality and most of it was through people volunteering their time. South Wayne is very lucky to have so many helpful and caring people. This park will provide many fun hours to many people. You all made a big difference. Thank you. - Connie Meier

A Barb to Rep Ringhand and other democrats rhetoric about cutting funding to schools by $800 million and giving tax breaks to corporations and the rich while erasing a $3 billion budget deficit. While state revenue to schools is $800 million less next year, this is all made up by teachers and some administrators paying more for their heath insurance and paying some of their pension. Some school districts faired better than others by waiting to sign their new contracts and the ability to now get better health insurance deals. There will have to be some tweaking of the system once everything shakes out.

As for the corporate tax breaks, WI has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the country.

One tax break is to give WI businesses in manufacturing and agriculture tax credits of various percentages over the years on their tax bills which should encourage manufacturing expansion creating jobs. Another is a tax deduction for hiring new full time employees, I would think that would help create jobs. Remember, corporations need to make profits to expand and even to stay in business, when you increase their taxes they will either pass these higher costs onto the those that purchase their items ( the consumer ) or they will move somewhere where their costs are less, taking the jobs with them.

As for the tax breaks for the rich, the elimination of state capital-gains taxes on long term investments of at least 5 years in WI businesses and to defer taxes on capital gains reaped elsewhere if the proceeds are put back into WI businesses. Basically, if you invest in WI businesses , you don't have to pay capital gains taxes ( WI has one of the highest rates in the country ) on profit from your investment, this should certainly create an influx of money into WI that should help create jobs. In both cases of the so-called tax breaks for corporations and the rich, the tax breaks only occur when the profits, etc are reinvested into WI businesses. This should create manufacturing and other jobs in WI and this in turn will help the economy turn around. - A TAXPAYER

A Barb to the Aug 1st article by the La Crosse Tribune concerning the lost rail funds. It blasts then Gov. elect Walker for stating that he was against a somewhat high speed rail between Madison & Milwaukee and now is being blamed for Pres Obama & Transportation Sec LaHood pulling those funds before Walker even took office. Included in the $810 million was $100 million for upgrades to the Hiawatha Rail Line between Milwaukee and Chicago which has a high ridership and is in need of repairs. Walker was and is in favor of upgrading the Hiawatha line but against the Madison to Milwaukee line because it would have few riders, high maintenance costs that would pull $$ from other projects in the state, was going forward before environmental surveys were completed as in ALL other construction projects and wasn't even going to be high speed. The point is that Obama & LaHood pulled the money without even discussing the project with Walker to possibly reach a compromise. Obama could still have paid for the upgrades to the Hiawatha line, as they were two separate lines, Obama could have paid for the upgrades needed on the existing lines between Madison & Milwaukee creating a large number of construction projects, but no, Obama chose to pull all the money before Walker even took office, instead of working with Walker to find a compromise that made sense for WI residents. Walker looked at the future costs and realized that it was a bad deal for WI. I would compare it to you needing your car fixed and Obama saying he will pay to fix it ( Hiawatha line ) and then saying he will also give you a Porsche (Madison to Milwaukee line), but you have to pay the ownership costs : insurance, maintenance, gas, etc.

It sounds great to start with until you realize that the ownership costs will prevent you from making your mortgage payments, pay electrical bills etc and that eventually you will be broke and so you tell Obama no thanks for the Porsche. Obama then says no Porsche, no money to fix your car. It's Obama's fault that WI residents have to pay fix the US government owned Hiawatha line. I hope Walker continues, and hopefully other governors follow along, in spending money only on necessary projects and say no to federal money for wasteful projects just to spend the money. - ATAXPAYER
