Are You Still My Senator?
Howard Marklein

On February 20, 2024, the Governor signed Act 94 to draw new legislative district boundaries in Wisconsin. These districts officially go into effect for the 2025-26 legislative session. However, over the next several months, some of you will begin seeing new legislators and candidates running for office. Many constituents have called, emailed and asked “are you still my Senator?” The answer depends on where you live.

The new 17th Senate District includes all of Crawford, Grant, Green, Iowa and Lafayette counties, as well as the southwest corner of Dane County. I was elected to a four-year term to represent the 17th Senate District in 2022 and I fully intend to continue doing so.

What does this mean?

I will continue to serve the people of the current 17th Senate District, including Grant, Green, Iowa, Juneau, Lafayette, Richland, Sauk and Vernon counties until the new legislative session begins in January 2025.

I am also getting to know the new communities I will be serving in Crawford, Iowa, Green and Dane counties by attending meetings and events, reading community newspapers and reaching out to community leaders to better understand the needs of these new areas.

From now until January, if you reside in the current and new 17th Senate District, I encourage you to continue to communicate with me. My team is ready and willing to serve you, receive your input, answer questions or provide assistance with any state-related matters.

After the election in November 2024, a new Senator will represent my communities in Juneau, Richland, Sauk and Vernon counties. As of right now, my colleague, Senator Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) is planning to run for the 14th Senate District, which will include Richland, Sauk and the southern communities of Juneau County. My colleague, Senator Pat Testin (R-Stevens Point) will be running to represent the 24th Senate District that will include most of Juneau County.

Prior to the start of the new session, we will work together to make sure that everyone continues to be heard and served in the current and new 17th Senate District. Please keep in touch.

The legislative map changes also affect Assembly Districts. The 49th Assembly District, represented by Rep. Travis Tranel (R-Cuba City), will extend into Crawford County. The eastern side of Grant County will be part of the 51st Assembly District, represented by Rep. Todd Novak (Dodgeville). Finally, there will be a new 50th Assembly District, which is currently represented by a combination of both Rep. Novak and Rep. Clinton Anderson (D-Beloit). Rep. Jenna Jacobson (D-Oregon) also lives in the new 50th.

I recognize that these changes can be confusing and frustrating. I am going to dearly miss the friends I have made in Juneau, Richland, Sauk and Vernon counties. We have done very good work together and it is difficult to pass you along to another legislator.

However, I am also excited and optimistic about the new communities I represent. I look forward to learning about the communities in Crawford, Green and Dane counties that I have not represented before. I am excited to renew my contacts in Iowa County, which I represented before the maps changed during my service in the Assembly.

No matter what, I am here to serve you and help you to connect with your legislature. My team and I will do our best to provide the support and assistance you need to make this transition.
