Amendments serve important purpose

To the editor:

This is a response to a letter published earlier this month by a local attorney which held some misleading information on the mission and goals of a nationwide movement known as United To Amend.

Constitutional Amendments may be "rare" but have been necessary for the common good. Eight months after the end of the Civil War led to the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863; the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery was ratified in 1865. Women's suffrage struggled tirelessly from 1890 to 1919; the 19th Amendment was adopted on Aug. 18, 1920 that gave women the right to vote.

We The People, seeing that tyranny once again exists in our government, choose to work as non-partisan volunteer activists and emulate those who have fought for the common good before us. In UTA we believe that per the U.S. Constitution: Constitutional rights are inalienable and for human beings only, and money is not speech, and therefore, spending/contributions in our political processes can be limited and regulated to allow all Americans to participate equally. The UTA movement seeks to reverse some Supreme Court case laws that present the fictitious impression that corporations, organizations, non-profits and other artificial entities are endowed with constitutional rights and that regulating political contributions and spending is equivalent to limiting political speech.

Seeking this CA will not take away any Constitutional rights from any owners of businesses or any employees of businesses on our Monroe square. The businesses will continue their commerce and serve the public with the powers and privileges granted to them under their state charters.

The type of CA that UTA seeks does not lead us further to an "all powerful government." Just the opposite is true. What we have now is an oligarchy which means that our government functions to serve only the rich. The CA would once again place "The People" as the true legislators of our democratic republic. We can once again have a government that is Of The People, By The People and For The People - a system that works equally for everyone. Through the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, We The People are sovereign and the true legislators of our democracy and our aversion and reaction to tyranny is what leads the mission and goals of United To Amend.
