A group effort to honor county's veterans

Throughout the country, communities have memorials honoring our veterans that have served the United States. Until now, the young men and women that have been sent to fight in the cause of freedom did not have one in Green County for all county veterans.

To ensure our future, a group of interested people are busy making plans for the proposed Green County Veterans Memorial Park to honor all veterans. Located at Pleasant View Park at the intersection of Wisconsin 81 and County N, the development of the park will be the responsibility of the Veterans Memorial Park Project Committee. The group will be meeting on a regular basis until the proposed park is completed.

One of the initial tasks was relocating the M-60 tank from the original location on 6th Street, the site of the new Green County Justice Center. Junior Robertson and Jim Bartelt were instrumental in making sure the Pleasant View site was ready for the placing of the tank at the new home this year. The land for the Veterans Park was dedicated by the Green County Board of Supervisors. County Clerk Michael Doyle serves as liaison to the committee.

Many local contractors, county employees and volunteers provided the necessary equipment and volunteer hours to relocate the tank, including E & N Hughes, which furnished a truck and trailer to haul the tank. Jeff Thomm, Duane Kubly and Alvin Wald provided the use of their equipment and volunteered many hours of labor.

The committee recognizes the cooperative effort of the Green County Highway Department employees for coordinating the moving, headed by Dallas Cecil, and Sheriff Randy Roderick and the Green County Sheriff's Department for escorting the tank to the new site.

We are grateful to the Green County Board of Supervisors for designating a portion of Pleasant View Park for the Veterans Park. Our future plans for the park will be a lasting tribute to those gave their lives fighting for our freedom and to those who returned home to their families and are moving forward.
