I am in my fourth basketball postseason as editor of The Monroe Times. Weve had teams make state each of those four years, and this will be the second consecutive year with at least two teams in our coverage area playing in Madison. The Monroe boys could yet make it three for this year. This is the first year since Ive been here that two girls basketball teams have made it to state.
Four years. Six teams, perhaps seven, at state. Wow.
Having basketball teams at state makes for a fun but busy week here at the Times.
Black Hawk will play in a Division 4 state semifinal at 9:05 a.m. Friday against Potosi. Monroe faces Grafton in a Division 2 state semifinal at 1:35 p.m. Friday. Championship games are Saturday the Division 4 game at 12:05 p.m., followed by the Division 2 game.
We began working Sunday on putting together a special section that include both the Monroe and Black Hawk girls teams. The section will publish in Thursdays newspaper and will be posted online. It will include season recaps, features, photo pages and player profiles for both teams, as well as a state tournament overview and detailed information about each of the four teams in Division 2 and in Division 4.
Also later today we will have posted on our Web site home page a feature encouraging readers to submit words of encouragement for either team. Some of those comments may be included in the special section.
Were also planning to cover the teams practice sessions at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, and hope to have other features and photos throughout the week.
On Friday, both of our sports reporters, Adam Krebs and Mark Nesbitt, will be in Madison covering both games. Our photographer, Brenda Steurer, also will be at both games. Well update our Web site with final results and stories throughout the day Friday and hope to have photo galleries from both games posted late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Well follow the same routine on Saturday, should one or both teams make the championship game.
Any fans who come up with photos or video from the game are welcome to send them to us, as well, and we can post them to the photo gallery.
If you have any other ideas for coverage, feel free to add a Reader Comment to this blog. And make sure to visit our home page and leave a word of encouragement to the Cheesemakers and the Warriors!
