The McCain Pick
Placeholder Image
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has just finished her first speech as Sen. John McCains running mate. What an odd morning.

In the Times newsroom, we spent the first part of the morning waiting for definitive news to break on McCains pick to try to get it in todays newspaper. During the morning, the cable news networks made many picks for him.

First it was Mitt Romney.

Then there was a report that an Alaskan governor almost no one (myself included) had heard of before this morning was on her way to Dayton, Ohio, where McCain was to make his announcement. Minutes later there was a report that she was going to be at the Alaska State Fair today ... far away from Ohio.

Then the choice was Joe Lieberman. Shudders could be heard across the country.

Then it was Tom Ridge.

(For whatever its worth, both campaigns have proven very good at keeping in information about their VP picks.)

And then, finally, at about 9:30, there was confirmation that the choice was the Alaskan governor.

Unfortunately, our news pages were done and transmitted to Janesville about a half-hour earlier. We dont have any stories about McCains pick, because obviously anything written at 8:30 or 9 a.m. was going to be irrelevant by the time the Times hit the streets.

I will give McCain one thing, its an interesting pick. I suspect its not a good pick, but its certainly interesting. And it most definitely has stolen at least some of the thunder of Barack Obamas big speech Thursday.

Im curious what you think about McCains choice of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate.

Id also like to know what you thought of Obamas speech Thursday.

Lets discuss.
