Tennis anyone? Anyone...

Did you know that the tennis season is underway?

Yes, its true. The Australian Open is in its fourth day and nobody seemed to notice. Maybe its just me, but Im disappointed in this. I think tennis is a great game to watch on television.

The problem is that there are only six good tennis players in the world worthy of taking two hours out of the day to watch. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Serena and Venus Williams.

Thats it.

Ive given up on Andy Roddick. The guys got a huge serve, but thats it. As everyone has said, maybe if Roddick wins a major tennis in the United States will be relevant again. Unfortunately, Roddick had to be born in the same era as Federer and probably will never get to the mountain top.

After watching some of the U.S. Open last fall there does seem to be hope on the horizon. Donald Young is an exciting 18-year old player the sports potential Tiger Woods now ranked 98th in the world. Young won Junior Wimbledon in July 2007 and then lost in the third round in a very exciting four-set match.

But, until the playing field is more level tennis will toil in late-night ESPN2 obscurity.
