Primary numbers from Tuesday

Im a political junkie, and I love election returns. They come a close second in my limited mathematical world to baseball statistics.

Call me a geek, if you like.

As elections go, Tuesdays primary didnt have too much to offer locally. But there still was enough to spend 10 or 15 minutes or so scanning through the various Green County results this morning on and after deadline.

Here are a few interesting things I noted:

There were 3,331 total cards cast in Green County on Tuesday. Thats compared to the more than 18,500 votes that were registered in last falls presidential election.

Attorneys Tom Vale and Dan Gartzke were the two winners in Tuesdays primary for judge of the newly created second branch of the Green County Circuit Court. They each received more votes than Timm Burns.

Vale had the strongest showing, collecting nearly 43 percent of the total vote. His 1,401 votes were 419 more than Gartzkes 982. Gartzke received 108 more votes than Burns in what was a relatively close race for the second spot on the April 7 general election ballot.

Where did Gartzke prevail over Burns? The difference was in Gartzkes hometown New Glarus area. In the Village of New Glarus four wards, Gartzke received 311 votes to Burns 29. In the Town of New Glarus two wards, Gartzke outpaced Burns by a margin of 124-22. Thats a difference in the New Glarus area of 384 votes.

Vale and Gartzke each won 10 of the countys 24 precincts, while Burns won four.

Assuming the same number of people vote in April, and the people who voted for Gartzke and Vale on Tuesday do so again, Gartzke would have to earn 647 of Burns 874 votes (74 percent) to overcome Vale. Of course, the likelihood of my hypothetical situation is nearly a statistical impossibility. But its still fun to run the numbers.
