Im not going to get into a dispute between two readers thats going on amid the posts to one of our stories online. But their battle does bring up a point Id like to make about reader comments. Perhaps Ive made the point here before, but if I have its been a while.
The dispute centers around the recent removal of a reader comment. One reader requested a portion of the comment be pulled. I pulled the entire comment.
I review every comment before it goes online. Occasionally, Ill approve a comment and then think better of it later, and remove it. Many posts rest in a gray area of appropriateness.
But our newspapers policy, like most, is to either approve and post an entire submission, or delete it entirely. For time and legal reasons, the Times has chosen not to undertake editing reader comments online.
Which would explain the number of misspelled and grammatically incorrect posts. But thats another story ...
