Forget about all the other reasons to ride a bike this Bike-to-Work Week, May 11 to 15, except for one.
While in the midst of this week, dont think about how a bicycles only pollution might be excess chain grease, how riding is great exercise or how riding is peaceful and a wonderful way to relax.
No, no; think about how it can save money.
Admittedly, I am a promoter of bike riding, and my bicycle commuting history is an unusual case.
When living in Illinois, I would ride to work 20 miles each way, which meant I couldnt ride every day, but I managed a few times a week. In Monroe, I live less than a mile from work. Consequently, I can ride everyday rain or shine.
Again, thats not normal, but the money I save now has me just as motivated as my ride-to-work-training rides back in Illinois.
Now, I park my car on Sunday night after a weekend of typical out-of-town travel, and it wont move again until Saturday morning.
I save about $40 per week compared to the amount I spent commuting in the Chicago suburbs.
Even if a person rides a mile to work twice a week, it can add up over a year. And, riding puts fewer miles on your car or truck, which also saves money, potentially, in repair costs.
Think about it; especially as the economy remains in the tank. And, theres no better time to give it some thought than this week. By the way, Friday is Bike-to-Work Day.

Ill see you on the road.
Take care and watch out for bicycles.
