No problem with crackers and tissues

The kids are back in school hurray!

Ive heard some rumblings here and there about the back-to-school items parents are expected to supply for their children.

My kids go to Parkside Elementary School in Monroe. In addition to folders, pencils and glue sticks, their supplies list included hand sanitizer, tissues and for my first-grader, a box of crackers for snack time.

Some parents (and grandparents) have said they think the district should be supplying these items, and they wonder what the schools will be asking for next. Toilet paper?

I dont agree with their objections. I think its a prudent way to help the district control costs.

When you stop and think about it, our public education system is pretty amazing. Yes, I agree taxes are outrageous trust me, I pay plenty of property taxes too. And yes, school fees add up quickly even in elementary school. I just wrote a check for $205 for fees and a years worth of milk for two kids. And that doesnt include money for the lunch account. (I cant wait to see the bill when they get to high school.)

But Im getting a lot in return for my money. I have two kids in the Monroe school system. My stepson just graduated, and my youngest will be entering 4K next year. From what I see, the Monroe school district does a very good job educating my children while being fiscally responsible. I think the same can be said for area school districts as well.

If it helps contain costs to have parents provide consumables such as tissues and crackers and hand sanitizer, so be it.

What about you? Do you think its reasonable to ask parents to provide these items?
