NFC, finally, is better

How long has it been since you could say with a straight face that the National Football Conference is the better of the two in the NFL?

You might have to go back to the mid- to late-1990s, back when Aikmans Cowboys, Youngs 49ers and Favres Packers were battling for NFC supremacy. When the Packers won the Super Bowl in 1997, it was the 13th consecutive title won by an NFC team.

Since then, the AFC has dominated, winning 8 of 10 Super Bowls until the New York Giants shocked the previously undefeated New England Patriots last year. And during those years, the quality of teams from top to bottom in the AFC was far superior to the NFC.

This year, I think the NFC is better for the first time in a decade. Not by much, mind you, but better nonetheless.

Yes, the AFC has the team with the best record, the Tennessee Titans at 12-2. But does anyone really think the Titans are the Super Bowl favorites? I dont.

I think the New York Giants are the best team in football, assuming they leave their guns at home and Brandon Jacobs is healthy for the playoffs. And I think Id take my chances with either the Carolina Panthers or the Dallas Cowboys against the Titans in the postseason.

The NFC has 11 teams at .500 or better nine of them with winning records. The AFC has only nine teams at .500 or better. The NFC has two divisions the East and South without a losing team after 15 weeks. The AFC has none.

The NFC has been inferior for a decade. No longer. Now if the National League in baseball could make the same change ...
