I often hear that the media is partly to blame for the national recession, for blanketing the airwaves and newspaper pages with bad economic news. But, frankly, its hard not to report whats going on nationally and locally.
A reminder of that came this morning with a couple pieces of news, the first from the state Department of Workforce Development. The unemployment rate in Green County rose to an alarming 8.1 percent in January, up from 5.5 percent in December. In January 2008, the rate was 5.0 percent. All 72 Wisconsin counties had unemployment rates increase in January.
We also learned that between 50 and 60 people were victims of layoffs at Kuhn North America in Brodhead on Thursday. Thats more economic bad news for a community that already has taken large hits from Stoughton Trailers and Woodbridge in recent months.
Our reporter, Brian Gray, is working on a story for Saturdays edition about Kuhn-Knight. If youd like to talk to her, contact her at bgray@themonroetimes.com.
