MONORE Monroe Mayor Ron Marsh was more than a little surprised that he was not notified of Governor Doyles visit to Monroe Tuesday.
Governor Jim Doyle visited communities in southwest Wisconsin, including Monroe, Darlington, Spring Green and Mineral Point, to discuss investments in dairy modernization, specialty cheese production, drinking water infrastructure and grazing.
At Wisconsin Cheese Group, Inc. in Monore, Doyle announced that 25 dairy manufacturers will share $700,000 in Dairy Plant Investment Tax Credits. Wisconsin Cheese Group is receiving a $45,334 tax credit to modernize and expand.
The reason I wasnt there is because I didnt know about it, Marsh said Wednesday. I didnt get a phone call, nothing. The first I knew about it was when I read it in the paper this morning.
Some people thought Marsh had injured his back and could not attend the Governors event. But Marsh injured only his arm in an accident and was back at work Monday. Marsh took a ride down a ladder when it slipped out from under him at his home on Sunday.
Marsh said Wednesday he would not speak for the Governor and cant control where the Governor goes.
It would have been nice if they had let us know, Marsh said.
if I had known, I would have been more than happy to greet the Governor and welcome him to our city, he added.
Carla Vigue, spokesperson for Governor Doyles office, said the governor was announcing grant checks Tuesday, and the Dairy Manufacturing Facility Expenditures Credit was going to dairy manufacturing operations modernization and expansion.
If the grant check was going to the city, the mayor would have definitely been contacted, Vogue said.
Vogue said the presentation was not closed to the public.
Contacts made for the Governors visits depend on what kind of event it is, she added.
If it is specific to the city, then the Mayor is contacted; if specific to a business, they are. We go to several places a day, so it depends upon the type of event, she added.
Funding for the City of Darlington was presented the same day, which is why Darlington Mayor Dave Breunig was contacted.
