Lower drinking age proposal

When you make a commitment to write a local editorial five days a week in a market the size of Monroe's, there will be days when a topic escapes you. There are busy news stretches, full of interesting editorial fodder. Then there are slow patches.

Such was the case last Monday (March 31). It was the day before a relatively quiet municipal election. We'd already written the get-and-out-vote editorial. We were searching for a topic.

We settled on writing about a proposal to lower the drinking age to 19 in Wisconsin for military members. It's not a particularly hot topic in the Legislature, which is out of session. But it's an interesting proposal nonetheless.

I certainly don't want to say it was a throwaway "Our View." We don't consider any of them to be. But there are editorials you know will ruffle feathers and get people talking, and this wasn't one of them in my opinion.

However, if you look today at our "Most Discussed" list, that particular opinion piece is at the top. It's a pleasant surprise. I love to read the back-and-forth from readers on issues of local (state included) importance.
