A reader commented today to Our View, which was a short and simple editorial about the upcoming high school sports postseason. The reader, What About Hockey? was lamenting that the Monroe Avalanches high school hockey program wasnt included in the editorial, or receiving coverage in the Times.
Fair enough point to make. But let me explain, and hopefully move a few issues forward.
First, the editorial was about local high school teams, specifically. The reality whether its right or wrong, fair or unfair is that the Avalanche program is not affiliated with the high school. Its not a WIAA team. The editorial certainly wasnt intended as a slight, though I understand this particular reader took it that way.
Now, lets try to move a few things forward.
I think hockey should be a high school sport in Monroe. I dont know all of the reasons why it isnt, but the participation and interest in youth hockey in Monroe would, I believe, bode well in starting a high school program. If a conversation started at the school board level about hockey as a district-sponsored sport, Id be on the hockey folks side.
There was another comment made by the reader Id like to address.
I guess because the school system is unwilling to take the program under its budget, then its not good enough for the Times to report about, the reader said.
First, there have been very few reports about the Avalanche in this years Times. Thats because we havent had information (stories or photos) submitted consistently, or at all, by anyone involved with the Avalanche. We rely on coaches and parents to submit information from the games that are played. When we get information and photos, we try to publish it as soon as possible. The Mat Rats wrestling program, as an example, has been very good about getting information to us and I believe weve been prompt in getting it published.
Until this year, weve published a good number of Avalanche stories and photos. Well do so again, if we have information sent to us to work with. Feel free to send stories and photos to our sports editor, Adam Krebs, at sportseditor@themonroetimes.com; or to me at editor@themonroetimes.com.
With that said, the Avalanche varsity team is the No. 2 seed in its WAHA state playoffs, and twice has beaten the No. 1 seed, Kenosha. So, go Avalanche!
