After every election, there is a scramble to get the latest results in the newspaper. People who voted want to know who won their local races.
Results from Green County townships, villages and cities come directly to Green County Clerk Mike Doyles office on election night. Within a few minutes after the returns come in, theyre posted on the countys Web site.
So people in Green County races know pretty quickly who won, and who lost.
But some area school district races, such as New Glarus and Argyle, include areas outside of Green County, and that can be a problem.
For example, two townships in Dane County didnt report their results to the New Glarus School Board secretary Tuesday. In Green County voting results, the difference between the second-place finisher, Marty Andersen, and the third-place finisher, Paul Heberer, was 138 votes. Maybe the margin of victory was wide enough that results from two Dane County townships wouldnt make a difference.
The Dane County Clerks office suggested we call the townships to find out their results.
In the Argyle School Board race, however, five people ran for three positions. Green County election returns showed a three-vote difference between the third-place finisher, Larry Flannery, and the two remaining candidates.
To find out the results from school districts, calls to superintendents and secretaries were made. We were able to get the Argyle results in time for todays newspaper, but not the New Glarus and Pecatonica vote total. Im still working on getting those, and well have them online as soon as we do.
In the Argyle race, Stanton Bigelow, one of the lower vote-getters in the Green County results, finished tied for the most votes.
About the only way to solve the problems of trying to get results from multiple-county school districts is to ask the board clerks to call or e-mail us with the results as soon as possible so we can get the information in the paper or on our Web site as soon as possible.
It makes it easier for us, but it also makes it easier for the people who took time out of their day to vote.
