Crosswalk controversy

Thanks to our "Blossoms & Barbs" feature, the woman in the white van who allegedly parks in the crosswalk at Abe Lincoln school might want to think twice about doing it again.

Two weeks worth of barbs and angry comments toward the driver prompted our photographer and a reporter to head over to the school for student pickup time Monday. They wanted to see whether someone in a white van actually put it in park in the middle of the crosswalk.

Others were curious, too, as a handful of other drivers came up to our reporters and told them they knew who the driver was, and that she doesn't come to the school on Mondays. Which might explain why the Monroe Police Department didn't find any violators yesterday. Yes, for those of you out there who have been critical of the police for not stepping in, they were keeping an eye out Monday. Maybe someone there reads "Blossoms and Barbs,"too.

The whole thing makes us wonder whether anyone's actually approached the driver and told them that what they're doing is wrong. Or have they just decided to complain anonymously to the newspaper, instead? If they have talked to the driver, why wouldn't she stop parking in the crosswalk - if , indeed, that is what is happening?

Here's hoping someone's either talked to the driver, or she's read the comments in "Blossoms and Barbs" and online, and been persuaded not to park in the crosswalk. But if the white van or any other vehicle ends up parked in the crosswalk outside Abe Lincoln school, it would be best for the police to take care of the situation with a warning or a ticket.
