MADISON - The Monroe Eighth-Grade Blaze football team finished their 2009 football season winning 16-6 against the Spartans White team from Madison.
On the Spartans first possession, the team fumbled, giving the Blaze good field position. The Blaze ran the ball well their first possession driving inside to the Spartan 8-yard line, but two early penalties and an interception stalled the drive.
The Spartans struck first early in the second quarter behind their high-power running game. The Blaze had trouble getting anything started offensively for the rest of the half.
The turning point of the game came late in the first half when the Blaze stuffed the Spartans on the 1-yard line as time expired in the half.
The Blaze came out in the second half on fire, driving the ball into Spartan territory. Monroe's first score was set up when Jake Hirshbrunner hit Blake Duffy on a 35-yard pass play getting the Blaze inside the 10-yard line. Three plays later, Hirshbrunner scored on a quarterback sneak behind great blocking from the offensive linemen. Duffy added the two-point conversion to give the Blaze the lead, 8-6.
Monroe's defense was key in the second half, giving up two first downs.
The Blaze running game was lead by Kyle Olson, Charlie Kind and Alec Treuthardt. The Blaze rushed for more than 200 yards on the day. Monroe put the game out of reach when Hirshbrunner scored again on a sneak late in the fourth. Duffy added the two-point conversion.
With the win, the eighth-grade team finish the season 6-1-1, and a youth football career record (fifth grade to eighth grade) of 30-15-1.
Blaze 7th Grade 8, Middleton Cardinal Red 8
MIDDLETON - The Seventh-Grade Blaze tied the Middleton Cardinal Red Saturday afternoon.
Middleton scored with 1 minute, 30 seconds left in the first half on a 70-yard pass play. The extra point was good for an 8-0 lead at the half.
The Blaze responded early in the third quarter with a drive resulting in a 40-yard run by Cody Wolf. The extra-point kick by Chase Hellenbrand was good, tying the score.
Monroe gained 154 yards rushing on 40 carries and completed 2 of 9 passes for 10 yards with two interceptions. Middleton gained -11 yards on 22 carries and completed 6 of 14 passes for 97 yards with three picks.
For the Blaze, the defense was strong again. Jake Eggers led the way with seven tackles while Mitch Swanson, Rhett Katzenberger and Joe Dahmen added six tackles each. Dahmen had five tackles for loss. Matt Coplien, Jacob Flannery and Chase Hellenbrand had interceptions.
The Blaze finished 4-1-1 in the DCAYFL and 4-2-1 overall.

Middleton's only score came with just under a minute to play in the first half on a 29-yard run.
With eight players sick or injured, Monroe struggled to move the ball and was hurt by an early game interception and two second half fumbles.
Monroe's only scoring threat ended at the Middleton 29 when the Blaze was unable to convert a fourth-and-five.
Defensively, Monroe stayed in the game with fumble recoveries from Jordon Pernot and Jaron Kuester.
For the Blaze, 16 out of 18 dressed players recorded at least one tackle. Garrett Gogin lead the way with 12 tackles followed by Traiten Gorr's nine. First-year players Kody Spohn, Jared Harring and Nash VonKaenel all stepped up and recorded six, three and two tackles, respectively.
The Blaze sixth-graders ended the season with a 2-6 record.

Monroe Blaze fifth grade ended in a 0-0 tie with Sun Prairie Sacred Heart to end the season 7-0-1, but still unscored upon. No other details were reported.
