Brodhead, Juda-Albany clinch conference titles

BRODHEAD — With its 7-0 win over Evansville on Tuesday, May 9, Brodhead clinched at least a share of the Rock Valley Conference title. In conference, the Cardinals have outscored their opponents 134-12 and recorded nine shutouts. 

After two scoreless innings, Mckenna Young delivered a two-out RBI double to left to put Brodhead on the board. The Cardinals added on in the fourth, as Alexis Kammerer and Jaelyn Hilliard led off with back-to-back singles. Jerrica Schwartz moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and the first run came across on an error. Tatum Ceslock followed with a single to right, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 lead from which the Devils couldn’t recover.

Sophia Leitzen and Ceslock finished the game with two hits each, as Young picked up the win. She allowed just two hits and struck out 10. 


Panthers shut out Ponies

JUDA — Juda-Albany needed just three runs to defeat Monticello-New Glarus 3-0 on Wednesday, May 10. The win, paired with its 5-2 win over Barneveld, secured an outright Six Rivers East Conference Championship. 

The Panthers scored two runs in the third, as Ciarrah Davis led off the inning with a single. Emerson Briggs moved her into scoring position, and Alana Durtschi drove her home with a single to left. Durtschi advanced all the way to third on poor throws. With a sacrifice fly from Freitag, Durtschi scored for a 2-0 lead. Durtschi scored again in the fifth as Freitag reached on an error.

Jackie Nusbaum and Durtschi finished 2-for-3 each, while Avary Briggs picked up the win. She was three walks away from a perfect game.

The day previous, the Panthers overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Barneveld 5-2. Avary Briggs finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. She also collected the win, giving up two earned runs on eight hits. She struck out eight and walked just one.


Argyle holds on for win

ARGYLE — Despite three runs in the last three innings by Monticello-New Glarus, Argyle won 4-3 on Tuesday, May 9. 

The Orioles tallied just three hits to the Ponies’ nine, two of which came from Mya McNett. The sophomore also recorded the win, giving up two earned runs on nine hits. She struck out five and walked one.

Karlee Wilkins paced the Ponies, going 2-for-4 with a double. Grace Seffrood and Sadie Wilkins also recorded multiple-hit games. Tatum O’Bel suffered the loss. She gave up three earned runs on just two hits. 


Vikings fall in nine

BLANCHARDVILLE — An RBI single from Eliza Ingwell in the top of the ninth pushed Mineral Point passed Pecatonica 1-0 on Tuesday, May 9. Diana Hendrickson lined a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but that was the offense the Vikings could generate.

Leadoff hitter Trinity Gruenenfelder went 2-for-4 to lead Pecatonica. Chloe Schraepfer suffered the loss. She gave up just one run on seven hits. She struck out eight and walked four.


Darlington drops two conference games

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds still seek that elusive conference win, as they lost a pair of games to Mineral Point 18-1 and Fennimore 11-1. Jaylyn Schwartz, Ashlynn Norgard and Ella Winslow tallied two hits in the two contests. Sophie Wiegel suffered the loss in both games.
