Young grapplers start year in style

MONROE - The Monroe Mat Rats have kicked off another year in style by having success in tournaments in recent weeks.

A new generation of Mat Rats got started, while returning wrestlers racked up the wins in area tournaments.

Fourteen Mat Rats went to the Orangeville, Ill. tournament, which is specific for first- and second-year wrestlers.

In the kindergarten through second-grade division, Max Haffele and Bodie Minder took first. Max Golembiewski, Jacob Lohmar, Max Patterson, Logan Blum, Garrett Grossen, Brady Malkow and Brock Hummel each posted second-place finishes. Dayne Garwell, Luke Dubach, Corbin Mann and Caleb Bunker took third. Liam Hermanson finished fourth.

Returning MAT Rat wrestlers had a great showing at the Cambridge Tournament. Eighth-grader Ryan Hughes took first. At the Oregon tournament, Cole Murray (fifth grade), Troy Gorr (eighth grade), Eric Timm (eighth grade) and Hughes all took first.

In the Darlington tournament Jan. 3, four wrestlers competed.

In the kindergarten through second-grade division, Patrick Rielly took first place. In the fifth and sixth division, Thomas Rielly took fourth place, and in the seventh- and eighth-grade level, Troy Gorr took second place.

The Mat Rats continued their journey to Cuba City and Lancaster this past weekend.

In Lancaster, in the K-second grade level, Logan Blum took first and David Andrews took fourth in the fifth- and sixth-grade division.

At Cuba City, Rielly took first place in the K-second grade division, Murray took first in the fifth- and sixth-grade level, and Gorr took second place in the seventh- and eighth-grade division.

The Monroe Mat Rats will host a tournament Sunday at Monroe High School. The cost of admission is $1.
