MADISON - By his own admission, Kalvin York has had more exciting days.
In fact, the Sugar River senior standout wrestler spent more time sleeping and playing around with teammates than he did on the mat Saturday at the 36th annual Badger State Invitational at the Alliant Energy Center.
York pinned all three of his opponents in the first period en route to the 160-pound championship, but the three-time WIAA Division 2 individual state place winner and University of Wisconsin recruit had his focus on the big picture.
"No matter what the competition is, I can't get distracted," said York, who was named the invitational's most outstanding wrestler. "I'm there with my technique, I just have to stay sharp mentally. ... I just have to keep getting after it."
York (21-0) began the season wrestling at 171 pounds, but wrestled at 160 Saturday and intends to get down to 145 by the end of the season.
Stoughton and Milton also are focused on the end of the year, but it was the Vikings who got the upper hand this time around. Stoughton placed seven individuals in championship matches - winning six titles - en route to its fourth consecutive team title.
The Vikings finished with 257 team points, while Milton was second with 201 and Clinton was third with 146.
Brodhead had the best finish of area teams, taking 10th place with seven wrestlers placing. Both Mitchel Wiesenberg (119) and Brandon Hart (171) finished in fifth place for the Cardinals.
Wiesenberg was overpowering in a fifth-place match, pinning Sheboygan South's Ryan Liesch in 35 seconds. Hart outlasted Cambridge's Jared Lindsey, 6-1.
The Cardinals had four wrestlers finish seventh, including Josh Mchoes (103), Trevor Klein (160), Dan Douglas (189) and Cody Spooner (215).
Evansville-Albany finished 11th and had four wrestlers place, led by A.J. Harper, who took third place at 135 by defeating Milton's Dillin Brissette, 5-2.
Evansville-Albany sophomore J.J. Boley finished fourth at 112 after losing a third-place match to Stoughton's Ben Hite, 10-7. Evansville-Albany's Pat Meredith beat Brodhead's Devon Seitz in a major decision, 11-3, for fifth place at 140. Barry Badeau took sixth place at 145 after dropping a fifth-place match to Sparta's Morgan Leis, 13-4.
