MONROE - The Monroe baseball team received one of its better pitching performances of the season Thursday from junior Trent Wyssbrod, who took a shutout into the fifth inning against Badger South-leading Milton.
The Red Hawks eventually got to Wyssbrod, scoring once in the fifth and five times in the sixth for a a 6-1 victory.
Cheesemakers coach Dustin Huffman said Wyssbrod was excellent.
"Trent threw really well. He moved his pitches up and down in the zone and he was getting his curveball around the plate," Huffman said. "There were a couple situations where he had strikeouts with guys on base to end the inning. That's encouraging to see because we haven't been getting a lot of strikeouts."
Wyssbrod went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and six runs - five earned - with three strikeouts and five walks.
Senior Austin Burandt went 2-for-3, Dusty Burkhalter doubled and Mitch Riese singled to account for Monroe's four hits against Milton's John Diestler, who had eight strikeouts.
Monroe (2-8, 1-5 Badger South) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth, scoring on an error. But the Cheesemakers returned the favor in the bottom of the inning, allowing a run to score on a dropped third strike with two outs.
Dane Burman's two-run single was the big blow for Milton in the five-run sixth inning.
Huffman said the Cheesemakers hurt themselves by misplaying two routine flyballs in the sixth inning.
"For us to be ahead 1-0 in the fifth inning is kind of an unusual situation for us and I was curious to see how we'd react," Huffman said. "We obviously didn't react like we needed to, but I told the guys that we can learn from this and the next time we're in that position, we'll know how to react."
Monroe is next in action on Tuesday, when Fort Atkinson will pay a visit.
