MONONA - Stephanie Wyss answered the bell at Tuesday's Badger Conference triple dual track meet with little forewarning.
Monroe's sophomore sprinter and leaper drew the daunting task of running against Oregon's do-it-all athlete Megan Beers and defeated her in the 200-meter run (27.52 seconds ) after Beers drew first blood in the 400 (60.59).
"We were all very curious to see where Oregon was going to put her," Monroe coach Curt Miller said of Beers, who is solid in anything from the 200 to the 3200.
Tyreisha Gibson (100 - 13 seconds), Claire Wyttenbach (100 hurdles - 17.53; 300 hurdles - 50.97), Paige Hoesly (triple jump) and Liz Knutson (pole vault - 9 feet, 6 inches) rounded out the winners for the Lady Cheesemakers. Wyss added a victory in the long jump at 15-5.
Wyttenbach set the tone early in winning the 100 hurdles by just three hundredths of a second. The field portion was all Cheese, as Monroe outscored Oregon, 44-10, outside the track events.
Monroe won its eagerly-anticipated matchup with Oregon, 79-67, while crusing past Monona Grove, 106-39.
Monroe's boys were simply ecstatic to keep the Silver Eagles under the magic 100-point mark in a 93-53 loss to Grove. The Cheesemakers made did their skipper proud in defeating an Oregon team, 95-51, that he thought posed an even matchup.
"We knew Oregon was going to be tough for us and we also knew that MG was kind of out of our reaches this year," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said.
Junior Brett DeNure was a double winner in the 400 (52.50) and 800 (2:06.30) and Monroe won the 4x800 relay (9:17.60) with a crew of Kyle Klein, Cody Plenge, Joe Pecora and Matt Priebe.
