Wiota can't adjust to speed zone

RIDGEWAY - The Wiota Indians struggled Sunday at the plate in a 5-2 Home Talent Sunday League game.

The biggest problem for the Indians? Chris Thousand, Lakeland College's former coach.

Thousand used his baseball nuance to pester Wiota hitters with a fastball that neared the freeway speed limit, some 20 miles an hour slower than many other hurlers in Home Talent.

"We just couldn't figure him out," Wiota manager Dick Schliem said.

Wiota got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning, but Ridgeway scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. Ridgeway added a run in both the 7th and 8th innings to extend its lead.

The Indians scored only their second run off of Thousand in the ninth inning, but Thousand gently closed the door.

Brock Bidlingmaier took the loss on the hill for Wiota, tossing 7 2/3 innings. Tommy Meier got the final out.

Aaron Lancaster was the only Indian to have success at the plate, finishing 2 for 4.

Wiota (10-5) hosts Cross Plains in the Night League makeup game Thursday, before hosting Monroe next Sunday in the regular season finale.
