BEAVER DAM - Forgive the Monroe boys tennis team if it didn't blow away its outstanding competition at Saturday's windy Beaver Dam Invitational.
The Cheesemakers went 9-11 in matches overall and placed fifth in the eight-team pack with 13 points. Madison Memorial won the meet with 35 points, Stevens Point was second with 28, and the hosting Golden Beavers took third with 15, just one point ahead of Waunakee.
Dan Becker was the last Cheesemaker on the court and lost a gritty tiebreaker, unfortunately the difference between a third- and fifth-place team finish.
That was only the beginning in the misfortune department as winds gusted relentlessly.
"In singles, Monroe had the misfortune of having all four players playing either Memorial or Point in the first round," coach Jim Bartholf said.
Artem Bralgin had the best showing with his consolation honor in No. 3 singles. Matt Le and Dan Becker were consolation runners-up, while Carson Root went two and out in No. 1 play.
"Madison Memorial and Stevens Points were much above anyone else," Bartholf admitted.
Bartholf also said the rest of the field was a fine blend and highly competitive.
Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn won second place in No. 3 doubles for Monroe's best showing on the day. Mark Hoesly and Jim Kundert won third place in No. 2 doubles, while Matt Turek and Levi Janssens took fourth in No. 1 doubles.
Monroe hosts Stoughton on Tuesday.
