MADISON - The weather wasn't kind to many Cheesemakers Thursday evening.

Such was the case for Jim Bartholf's tennis squad that took aim on a season-opening set of matches at Madison La Follette came up just short, 4-3, overall.

While that margin was as close as possible, it only scratches the surface as to how close the Cheesemakers came to pulling out a 'W.'

With intermittent rainfall making for a herky-jerky final 45 minutes, the match came down to two match tie-breaks at the end, both of which Monroe dropped.

Seniors Matt Turek and Levi Janssens split sets, 3-6, 6-4 and then lost the 10-point match tie-break, 10-7, to the No. 1 pairing of Truman Summ and Steve Amend.

Artem Bralgin split sets in his No. 3 singles match with Tim Poellmann, 6-3, 4-6, before falling 10-6 in the tiebreak.

Carson Root made his varsity debut at the top singles spot and lost in two sets to an experienced foe in Mike Schneider.

"Carson's unforced errors lead to his downfall," Bartholf said, "but he has a lot of skills and will improve much as the season goes forward."

Matt Le lost, 6-2, 6-4, to Elliot Nelson in No. 2 play and Dan Becker beat Aaron Pfeifer, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 4 action.

Handy 6-1, 6-1 victories by both No. 1 the tandem of Jim Kundert and Mark Hoesly and the No. 3 pairing of Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn had the Cheesemakers up 3-2 temporarily.

Monroe's junior varsity squad more than picked up the slack with an 8-0 blanking that included singles victories by Eric Knudtson, Garrett Grinnell, Jakob Baertschi and Blake Antos. Doubles winners for Monroe were Partick Gellings and Garrett Tschanz, Stewart Wyss and Jordan Everson, Mike Kohn and Joe Ganshert and Eric Ganshert and Eric Radke.
