BELLEVILLE - After banging heads for two weeks of practice, the Belleville-Albany football team had the chance to showcase a new offense in a scrimmage Friday night.
The early returns were mixed in a scrimmage against River Valley, Poynette and Cuba City. The Wildcats fumbled twice and had two penalties in their first seven plays. The Wildcats showed that they have a game-breaking running back in senior Donovan Woods.
Belleville-Albany coach Barry Lengfeld contends that it's still a work in progress.
"It's a new offense and we have a lot to learn quickly," Lengfeld said. "We want to get a look at some players."
On the final play in a first series of 10 plays against River Valley, Woods raced for a 35-yard touchdown run.
Lengfeld understands that the offense can't live with turnovers.
"You can't have the mistakes - the fumbles and offsides," he said. "It kills an offense."
Lengfeld said that the Wildcats are breaking in a lot of younger players on defense. The first tests for the defense came against River Valley and Poynette.
"It's a gap control defense," Lengfeld said. "We have to gang tackle. They have to tackle with their heads up. I think our players were there. We just need to finish it off."
Belleville-Albany hosts Edgerton in a season opener at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27.
