JUDA - Black Hawk's Chaesta Shager knew the West had a big size advantage down low in the Six Rivers All-Star game Friday night.
Highland's Taylor Wienkes scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Belmont's Kailee Kamps had 14 points to power the West to a 73-56 win over the East. River Ridge's Traci Kirschbaum added 11 points and had seven rebounds including four offensive rebounds in the second half.
"They just overpowered us," Shager said. "We tried to get as much help inside as we could. It just wasn't enough."
Wienkes enjoyed taking turns with Kamps scoring down low.
"These girls have been my enemies," Wienkes said of her West teammates. "Now they are on my team and it's awesome. It's so much fun.
"We get along really well," she said of Kamps. "She is a super person and athlete. We knew our roles and we took it as it was."
Shager scored a team-high 12 points to lead the East. Shager drilled two 3-pointers in the third quarter to tie the game at 33. After that, the West went on a 19-6 fourth quarter run to put the game out of reach. Potosi's Ashley Flesch scored on a layup and Kamps buried a 3-pointer to give the West a 47-37 lead with 2:17 left in the third quarter. Kirschbaum scored on a putback late in the third quarter to extend the West's lead to 52-39.
"Kamps has scored 30 points in a game this year," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "Wienkes has the ability to do that. Flesch, Wienkes and Kamps are the primary scorers for their teams. They just had more playmakers. They outrebounded us with their physical size and power."
Argyle's Danielle Treuthardt scored nine points. Juda's C.J. Dunwiddie, Monticello's Becky Nelson and Katie Gierhart as well as Black Hawk's Kate Quinn and Barneveld's Hailey Cannoy each added six points.
"I respected the kids' ability to battle back," Flanagan said. "We fought back and made some hustle plays."
