CAMBRIDGE - Monroe senior goalkeeper Rachel Wellnitz notched eight saves, and the Cheesemakers shut down Cambridge-Deerfield to win 2-0 on Saturday.
"She (Wellnitz) really has been stepping up," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "Rachel has really started to communicate much better with the defense. She has been stepping up and organizing the defensive unit."
Monroe sophomore Maddie Knutson scored a goal at the 9-minute mark on an assist from Emily Frankowski. Senior Lily Priewe scored the final goal on an assist from Kelley Baumann at 66:38.
"I think everyone was really determined to get a win," O'Neill said. "We dominated the entire game."
Monroe (6-7, 2-4 Badger South) played without two sophomore starters including Vanessa Studer and Lez'lee Foley. Studer has missed the last nine games with a knee ligament injury and Foley has missed most of the season with shin splints.
"We are hoping she (Studer) will be back at the end of the season," O'Neill said. "We are still unsure if she will be back."
O'Neill is also optimistic that Foley may be able to make a comeback.
"She has tried in a couple of games, but she has only been able to play for a couple of minutes," she said. "We are hoping at the end of the season she might be able to come back."
