Wellnitz has huge night; Darlington girls win title

BANGOR - Black Hawk sophomore Jen Wellnitz had a banner night at the WIAA Division 3 Bangor sectional Thursday, qualifying for state in four individual events.

Wellnitz qualified by winning a sectional championship in the 100-meter dash (12.74 seconds), finishing second in the 200 (26.40), third in the triple jump (33 feet, 5 inches) and fourth in the long jump (16-4).

"I didn't expect to make it in all of them," Wellnitz said after finishing the 200 after a 1-hour, 30-minute storm delay. "I'm glad that I did. I was really surprised. I PRed in the triple jump. My long jump wasn't as good, but I still made it."

The Darlington girls won the sectional title 78.5-56 over Blair-Taylor. Black Hawk finished 10th (31), Albany 15th (20), Pecatonica-Argyle 16th (18) and Monticello was 23rd (6).

Darlington junior Christa Wamsley won the 3,200 (11:59.59) and teammate Hannah Robiolio was third (12:22.17).

Wamsley and Robiolio teamed with Tatum Evenstad and Amy Jorgenson to win the 3,200 relay (10:08.94). The Redbirds' 1,600 relay team of Jorgenson, Claire Scott, Hannah Huffman and Alison Wedig won in 4:16.51. The Redbirds' 400 relay team of Carly Reilly, Scott, Huffman and Wedig won in 52.58.

Scott teamed with Rebecca Mathias, Huffman and Wedig to take fourth in the 800 relay (1:52.26).

Albany sophomore Bailey Hlavachek won the 800 (2:24.14) and the 1,600 (5:24.33). Pecatonica-Argyle senior Kendra Sigg finished second in the 1,600 (5:25.82).

The top four in each event advance to the WIAA Division 3 state track meet June 1-2 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.

"Her goal was to win both the 800 and 1,600," Albany coach Tony Brewer said. "We knew she would run the 800 and 1,600. That's why we ran her in those this year. Hopefully she can go up there (La Crosse) and run great."

Darlington senior Haily McGowan finished second in the discus (106-4) and teammate Abigail Merriam took third in the high jump (4-10). Cheyenne Wolfe added a fourth place finish in the 800 (2:27.52) for the Redbirds.

In the boys meet, Darlington sophomore Tyson Miehe won the 1,600 (4:31.84) and the 3,200 (9:39.80). Miehe will have plenty of company at state. His brother, Kent Miehe, finished third in the 3,200 (10:00.83) and Michael Sinclair was fourth (10:02.81).

Tyson and Kent Miehe teamed with Destin Komprood and Quinn Cullen to win the 3,200 relay in 8:23.05. The Albany boys 3,200 relay team of Juan Cid, Jose Ramirez, Gavin Ruef and Reece Whitehead finished third (8:26.56) to qualify for state for the fifth straight year. Whitehead added a third-place finish in the 800 (2:01.26) and Pecatonica-Argyle senior Wyatt Massey was fourth (2:01.35).

Pecatonica-Argyle's 1,600 relay team of Kyle Zwicker, Marcus Rubio, Cameron Colson and Nathan Loyd took third (3:36.87.

Darlington sophomore Kyle Johnson took third in the 300 hurdles (41.95) and fourth in the 110 high hurdles (15.92). Darlington's Levi Wedig took added a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (11-0). Whitehall (86) won the boys title and Darlington was second (71).

Black Hawk senior Chris Priebe took second in the 1,600 (4:35.02) and Komprood was fourth (4:39.40). The Warriors' 800 relay team of Kyle Woodruff, Jayden Rufenacht, Hayden Schliem and DeeJay Warrell finished third in 1:34.63. The Warriors' 400 relay team, which had the state's fifth fastest Division 3 time at the start of the week, was disqualified after dropping the baton.

"It's really disappointing," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said. "They were all upset. That's the way it goes sometimes."
