FORT ATKINSON - The bus for the Monroe baseball team broke down about 10 miles from Fort Atkinson Tuesday and the Cheesemakers' game started about 30 minutes late.
But the breakdown didn't faze the Cheesemakers as Monroe beat Fort Atkinson 8-0. Monroe senior pitcher Logan Weckerly tossed a three-hit shutout. Weckerly struck out five and walked four.
"Sometimes something like that can throw a team off," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said of having to call Fort Atkinson to get another bus. "We kind of joked about it a little bit. It was nice for them to forget about it and just go play baseball. Once we got off the bus it was our normal routine and we treated it like any other game."
Monroe (7-7, 3-5 Badger South) got a big lift when senior Matt Coplien crushed a two-out, two-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Cheesemakers a 5-0 lead.
Monroe senior Chase Hellenbrand had a key three-run double in the seventh to help the Cheesemakers tack on some insurance runs.
"That was really a big hit," Huffman said of Hellenbrand's double. 'We hit the ball really well and played great in the field."
Monroe junior Garrett Gogin went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Hellenbrand was 1-for-3 with three RBI. Sophomore Hogan Edwards was 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Monroe will play at Monona Grove Friday and will play a doubleheader at Mount Horeb Saturday.
