WAUNAKEE - Monroe boys basketball coach Pat Murphy is looking for the Cheesemakers to turn in a consistent defensive performance after Waunakee knocked off Monroe 68-62 in a non-conference game Saturday, Feb. 8.
Waunakee (3-14) raced out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter led by Robert Bymers. Bymers scored seven straight points in the first quarter to lead the Warriors' surge. Bymers finished with a game-high 23 points.
Monroe (8-11, 3-7 Badger South) trailed 41-27 heading into the fourth quarter. The Warriors scored 27 points in the fourth quarter.
"They took advantage of us trying to trap them in the backcourt," Murphy said. "They got some breakaway layups. They did a good job of attacking us and finishing at the rim. We just haven't been consistent enough to get the defensive stops and build off of that."
Monroe senior Jake Hirsbrunner scored a team-high 19 points and made three 3-pointers. Senior Kylan Helmeid scored 15 points and hit four 3-pointers and senior Charlie Kind added 10 points.
"Offensively, if you score 60 points you have to think you are going to win," Murphy said. "I don't think our help defense was very good at times and they made us pay for that."
