Waunakee knocks off Cheese in Badger opener

WAUNAKEE - In its first Badger Conference match of the season, the Monroe Cheesemakers went nose-to-nose with Waunakee in singles, but the Warriors took two out of three in doubles to top the Cheesemakers 4-3 Tuesday.

Waunakee's Shelby Chorney defeated Monroe senior Kristin McArdle at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, but the Cheesemakers countered with a win at No. 2 singles as junior Ellie Shuda prevailed over Tilly Chorney of Waunakee, 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Allie Taylor of Waunakee earned a hard-fought win over Monroe junior Lily Priewe, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 7-5. Cheesemaker senior Alyssa Quinn outlasted Waunakee's Megan Clack, 6-7 (4), 6-2-, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

The Cheesemakers were victorious at No. 1 doubles as senior Kelsey Erickson and junior Brooke McBain defeated Brooke Steiner and Beth Paradisin of Waunakee, 6-1, 6-1.

However, the Cheesemakers were unable to come up with a win in the remaining two doubles matches.

At No. 2 doubles, Mandy Rice and Abbie Zellner of Waunakee defeated seniors Becca Flannery and Rachel Thompson of Monroe, 6-1, 6-1. Monroe's No. 3 doubles team of senior Elisabeth Brunner and freshman Ellie Grossen fell to Waunakee's Jenny Baldwin and Sarah Dixon, 7-5, 6-3.

The Cheesemakers won the junior varsity match over Waunakee, 4-3.

Monroe's next match will be Thursday at home against DeForest.
