Warriors trump Pec; Argyle falls to Barneveld

SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Warriors followed up their Tuesday night win over conference leader Monticello with a three game sweep of the Pecatonica Vikings Thursday, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18.

Sophomore Jen Wellnitz helped the Warriors stay in command with 11 kills and two blocks. Senior setter Chaesta Shager also set the tone for Black Hawk with 16 assists. Pecatonica head coach Cher Schliem said the Warriors have a very good one-two punch.

"Between Wellnitz and (Katie) Quinn, they had some pretty good hits," Schliem said.

The Warriors also got a big contribution from sophomore Tessa Cushman, who had 10 digs.

"Their libero Tessa Cushman did a good job picking us up," said Schliem.

Pecatonica was led by Madelyn Fischer with seven kills and two blocks. Junior Michelle Francois delivered 10 assists, and seniors Michaela Boese and Allison Swenson each came up with six digs.

Black Hawk (6-5, 6-3 Six Rivers East) will host Juda Tuesday. Pecatonica (2-10, 1-9) will participate in the Darlington Tournament Saturday, then will travel to Barneveld Tuesday.

Argyle 2

ARGYLE - The Argyle Orioles missed out on a chance to pull to within a half-game of conference front-runner Monticello after a five-set loss to the Barneveld Eagles 17-25, 25-19, 26-24, 21-25, 15-10 Thursday in Six Rivers East Conference action.

The Orioles won the first set and led 17-14 in the second set, but got stuck in a rotation in which the Eagles scored nine straight points to take a 23-17 lead on their way to winning the second set.

The loss spoiled a sparkling performance by junior Kayla Ostby, who had 39 assists and 20 digs for the Orioles. Senior Danielle Treuthardt spiked 12 kills and senior Micala Peterson dropped in six aces for the Orioles.

Argyle (13-6, 8-3 Six Rivers East) will compete in the Darlington Tournament Saturday. Their next conference match is at Black Hawk Thursday.

Riverdale 3, Darlington 1

MUSCODA - The Darlington Redbirds came up a bit short in their SWAL Conference match with the Riverdale Chieftains Thursday, falling in four sets, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18.

Senior Laura Steiner made her presence felt on offense and defense with seven kills, five aces and four blocks to lead the Redbirds. Junior Cassidy Chambers had 11 assists and senior Emily Salathe recorded 13 digs for the Redbirds.

Darlington (2-9, 2-8 SWAL) will host its own invitational on Saturday before returning to conference action against Cuba City, also at home, Tuesday.
